    All Comercial Vehicles

Under Federal regs, a CMV is anything that is 10001+ GVWR. Unfortunately, there are states that now recognize things a bit differently. For example, I was made aware last week that AZ now says that any vehicle about 6000 GVWR used in a "for-hire" capacity is considered a CMV and if not under the...

    D.O.T Rules

Good point and make sure it covers any duty going back 7 days previous to the day you run it. You need to cover your service for the total of eight days.

You can always through a little cardboard sign on the side that "Out of Service" and/or "Not for Hire." Just keep that bill of sale with you.

How not to operate your business

Night, It could happen to anyone. These are uncertain times, times when even the most prepared of us have suddenly found themselves forking out unexpected expenses. It doesn't help when we've just come out of a couple of really up-and-down years, revenue-wise. Good luck to you. I know you'll...

What can we do to make it easier for dispatchers?

I'm still trying to figure out why all of the class warfare between parts of a company. I guess people need someone to blame when things get difficult on a load. Remember this about the dispatcher: He might not actually know that the load booked to deliver on Saturday at Acme Nugget Co., will...

What can we do to make it easier for dispatchers?

I know that this will fall to the center of all the "multi-leasing" debate, but I may be able to help you see the problem. If this is one of three companies you are doing loads for, then they only have about 33% of your effort. This MIGHT explain why it feels as if you are only getting about...

    Bad Companies

A lot of these "medical courier" type companies hire small cars and such at low percentages like 40-45% Why? Because they can. Supply and demand. No new investment by the driver. When the economy first started slowing around the fall of 2007, I was getting calls almost every day by someone with...

Any under-CDL Straight Trucks Out There?

No. It really does look as if this is a brand new thing. They are expanding permit requirements to boost revenue. It's silly that they expect vans and cubes to pay fuel taxes, when they know good and well that those vehicles have smaller tanks and will most likely buy fuel in that state before...

Any under-CDL Straight Trucks Out There?

Well, here we go. In AZ, a vehicle is required to register at 6000 GVW and up. Motor Vehicle Division

Any under-CDL Straight Trucks Out There?

The interesting thing is, that if you go to any website that specializes in permitting, they have NOTHING for Colorado OR Arizona, which leads me to believe that this is a new revenue scam created by agents attempting to reinterpret the regs. You ask them to show you where in the regs that it...

    about Flat rate Fsc

Without seeing the freight I couldn't tell either, but knowing how NLM works, I'd say that was a sprinter/12 ft straight load. Ford/NLM loads get considerably less FSC for actual van freight.

Are this Ford loads "vannable" or do they require a Sprinter?

Any under-CDL Straight Trucks Out There?

True. It's for CMV only. If you don't log or scale, you don't need one.

Any under-CDL Straight Trucks Out There?

Very strange indeed. Were they able to show you a state reg that said you were required to pay? I couldn't find ANYTHING of Colorado's website about day fees except where it applied to an IRP vehicle, where CO was not listed on the IRP. I think most DOT and state officer are trained with the...

Any under-CDL Straight Trucks Out There?

The reason I am asking is, if you are running a vehicle that does not require an apportioned (IRP) tag, it look like you got jacked for 60 bucks by a DOT officer who doesn't know the regs. That $60 day permit is for vehicles that DO require IRP tags, but don't have Colorado listed on the IRP...

    about Flat rate Fsc

I sure hate when some carriers take a system that could be a useful tool for both the carrier and owner operator and use it to screw the O/O. That's just wrong. Glad things are better where you are now.

    Negligence or cheating?

PC Miler doesn't have a feature on Sylectus to add the extra stop, at least not one I am aware of. If someone posts a load from Indy to Anaheim, with an extra stop in Laredo, you will get the miles from Indy to Anaheim. There is an override miles feature, where they could have put in the true...

    about Flat rate Fsc

Not sure what your former carrier did. I know I'm not makin' a killing off of CV freight, whether you want to call it the tariff OR the FSC. Why do SOME carriers (I can't speak for all) use a "flat rate" or a "sliding scale" type surcharge? Because there are times when my company is not even...
