    The Inevitable Begins

Lisa: If the contracting vans are having increased liability costs to the carrier, then they must not be carrying their own insurance. If they are not paying the liability, then their is NO WAY a carrier is going to allow them to run for multiple people. So that part doesn't even add up. Unless...

    The Inevitable Begins

Or.......they're tired of these contractors and don't want them calling in every three hours while sitting. I agree with Charles. Bring in Paul Harvey.

Congress Targets Detention Time at The Docks

Just a note to you guys running for people that make you wait at least 2 hours before paying you, consider this. They all pay us after one hour of waiting, and some do so very handsomely. They are not even shocked that we asked for it after the first hour. Why? Most are making detention from the...

Congress Targets Detention Time at The Docks

Jack, why do you need Defazio to win? You just stood up to them and won your own case. Big union docks employ people that don't know their butt from a hole in the ground. All they needed was a swift kick and they saw those $$ leaving. Nice job.

Congress Targets Detention Time at The Docks

Detention time wasn't taken from your company. Your salesholes GAVE it away while trying to make a penny for themselves.

Congress Targets Detention Time at The Docks

Who told you that NLM gives away 4 hours? Maybe with one specific customer, but MY contract with NLM doesn't say that.

Congress Targets Detention Time at The Docks

Unfortunately, stuff like this always adds a layer of regulation to us, one way or the other. It's one more law that will be virtually impossible to enforce, and only serves to make your shipper a lawbreaker. This could all be solved by carriers and brokers placing detention as an unavoidable...

    Re: West Coast Runs Reconsidered

Is this Custom Critical owned equipment, or Fedex Freight/LTL trailers, since it's basically all one thing now?

Yeah, I understand the specific reason this came up and it is sad.

    Re: West Coast Runs Reconsidered

Sorry to inform you guys who are cheerleaders for your "reputable" carriers, but the reason you aren't getting loaded in the "hard" spots is because your dispatchers are asleep at the wheel. Case in point, I recently had a new customer of ours call at 4PM to line up a pickup for 8AM the next...

    Brokers/expediters in the Southwest ?

You might not find a company that runs all over the country, but I am sure there are companies in the Tucson area that run a 300 mile radius very regularly. I know of a couple in southern Calif, but most of their stuff will be in and out of that area.

I have heard of this one really old skool method where you make business cards and visit companies, especially companies that have a dock out back. But then again, it probably won't work.

    Authority?

I always found that asking the guy in front of me at the Country Pride buffet worked best. However, I'm sure that channel 28 or 29 could offer a real education as well.

    Fuel Discounts

I had been contacted recently by another organization called Trans-Alliance. It looks similar to NASTC, but I think there are some fees charged when the card is used. I will be talking to them and pass on what I find out.

    Slow Cargo Van Freight Toledo-Detroit

We've done well this spring. I do think things slowed just a bit, starting last month. I figre it was either Japan or Libya and the markets. Last week was slow though. People are shopping more and I think many were low-balling to get trucks home for the holidays. This week has been much better.

    Fuel Discounts

The NASTC program looks good, except that we're pretty much stuck with TA/Petro fueling. I saw the list for discounts. What are the rates like elsewhere? Standard cash pricing?
