I can feel your pain. I've been w/ a courier company & while not as bad as yours, the 2 MO's were similar.
W/ the company I was w/, I had a route. The route started out w/ 15 stops. Then 16, then 17, w/ no extra pay. Their logic was it was only an extra 5 minutes. Mine was that 5 minutes means 10 total minutes (5 each way) which is an extra hour a week, or 52 extra hours a year.
I was also on call. Which in itself isn't so bad. We're on call for this industry too. What blew chunks about it was I was on call for a run that paid $14 for an 80 mile round trip. This was back when fuel was $4/gallon. So that left $2 profit.
They were based on a lot of low paying runs when ya combine em together ya can do ok. At nite though, it was only going to be 1 run.
Another thing that slayed me was this guy got $200 for going from Flint to Columbus using a company van. One day I subbed for him, but used my own van. I got paid $200 also. My bad for not asking the rate. I just assumed (I know, I know) that it would pay more since I was using my own vehicle.
Another thing that got me, even though I wasn't the one that got boned on this.. was this guy bought one of those VW's that get like 47 miles to the gallon or something. My route was 204 miles or so. His was like 280. Yet he only got like $2 more than I did. When he griped to em, they said "yea, but your car gets 47 miles to the gallon, Danny's only gets 30." It's like they must have thought he bought a new car for them to save $$ & not him.
I'm not sure if I left or got fired. Basically when I realized what was happening in that they kept adding stops I said no. They said they'd find someone else to do it then.
Like you, I should have seen the signs. There were 6 routes & in less than a year I was the 17th person to quit/get fired. That's almost 3 people per route in less than a year.
Too bad. For awhile I really liked that job. It was perfect in that it was local, got to use my car mostly & my van a bit too. When I first got it I may have even come on here & praised it. Strange how things can turn.
