Garden Corner 2011

Well it is a wash now.

I lost the other two gardens I had planted, one was wiped out by a nice old pine tree that toppled over right on the garden (it was on TV with my little plant signs sticking out of the branches) and the other was washed out thanks to the people pumping out their basement next door with the high volume trash pump, I don't care at this point because it was raw sewage.

So far I was told that I would lose my deck if I get FEMA to do the repairs to the foundation and the basement walls which means all the lettuce will be ripped up. What I have left is my plants in those little plastic containers that need homes and a bunch in pots.

My leeks look good but are bunched up, I have strawberries turning red and my horseradish and what garlic survived the rain and are now flourishing. I planted my Mexican peppers yesterday in one of those topsy turvy things and they took off within an hour of putting them in there.

Before we came out to SD JuJu's mom had FEMA do her basement floor....what a mess now....Fema did not raise anything nor put a box around anything....they encased the water heater, all the water valves in cement....we found this out when we had all the water lines replaced...had to jack hammer to get to the main shutoff and half the handle for the hot water`tank was encased...what idiots..

Now if I shop vac the basement twice a day for the next week, as long as it rains no more...I might get ahead of the game. Today is very windy so am hoping it helps to dry out the ground...and the garden some so I can get in there too!

Greg...I'm sorry to hear about your gardens..I'd be crushed.:(

Now I've got to find a spot to put in some red rhubarb...and go cut the other rhubarb and make some jam..then I think I'm going to bake some cookies while I'm waiting for the sun to come out and warm the earth.

Have u all ever thought about moving to higher ground? Well its a thought. U all definetly got a mess going on there. Maybe this flooding thing will stop for at least a 100 years.

Today seems to be a bad day overall.

Fema won't repair the basement walls, the adjuster said that there is no appreciable damage to them outside of a leak or three and even with the washing away of sand that supports the drive slabs, it doesn't count as a repairable item. They will pay for the drywall and other things but ...

Then the appliance insurance we have won't cover the the washer or dryer. With the BS we went through when we refinanced last year, our content coverage was dropped in the process to get the flood insurance straight, so we didn't get it added back on in time for this flood.

Then I am told by the township that they are going to refuse all claims made under the Michigan law that holds the township's water department responsible for floods, not because they are not responsible but because they don't consider the water sitting two feet above the street flood water.

On top of all of that, our three week fight to save my basset hound/beagle dog ended this morning with her being let go. She had paralysis of the rear legs which was improving but some how broke her shoulder when I went off to do my work Wednesday morning. The sitter may not have followed her instructions which caused the injury but it didn't matter what happened, she was in a lot of pain. The vet agreed after examining her. She was heavily sedated and still was in a lot of pain when we arrived this morning.

AND my garden, what's left of it, I have strawberries and tomatoes now.

We live on the higher end of the state and only have a few creeks ten miles north..too much rain and snow can still seep into the ground to give ya headaches in the basement though.

Greg...man I'm sorry to hear all your troubles..it just has to get better. Sorry about your dog too..I occasionally lose a cat..I think they get eaten by something..and I sure do miss them. I try to get them all in by dark..but they like to hunt at night so that's not always possible.

And we're having our first warm day..80 now so I watered the garden and my flower pots up on the deck. Now I'm just gonna try not to sweat..

Do you use Duke's mayo on your mater sammiches? Being a yank I still like miracle whip better..*l*

Didn't plant any strawberries though...did your wife?:)

Nah ... a properly made Mayo is the only way to go and if you can't get that ... then it is mayo in the jar.

I don't know why I can't eat MW any more, I grew up on it ... maybe it was when I learned how to make a proper mayo and Aioli (not the food network way).
