We planted 5 better boy tomato plants in a 20 gallon bucket full of horse manure. Does that count as a garden?
Also mowed 7 acres. Spring comes much earlier down here. High today was 91. And no rain in 2 weeks.
To have "green" is an expensive venture in north western SD....lol:eek:

Once upon a time our well handled all the water needs for a 2000 acre horse farm. It comes directly from an underground feed to the Ichetucknee River Spring system which is part of the Florida aquifer.
We get natural spring water for free.
We could have a nice little farm if it weren't for my wifes love of horses.

We have a grey water well, way up the hill...use it sometimes for the front lawn and some irrigation...

Hot Shower..Aleve/ibuprofin...heating pad...groaning and moaning here...glad you're not here to hear my knees pop!

So planning for tomorrow...shallots and leeks and garlic and radishes and maybe peas...

then repotting the pots on the deck with my pink geranium starts...hmmmmm..looking at the lawn..it won't be much longer..

hey...I'm going GREEN! *l*:D

jjoerger
You're putting tomato plants directly into pure fresh horse manure? I'd think that would almost burn them..????

We did it 2 years ago and it worked great. Horse manure isn't as strong as cow manure which I think is .5 .5 .5. Plus we have lots of it available for free. (3 horses)

I use it aged..horse and chicken...You're lucky to have the horses...but after a day in the garden I don't think I could ride...*l*

how in the world are you planting already in S.D. I live in northern Ohio and have been waiting for decent weather to get in the garden. Its either been too cold or constantly raining. If I tried to till the garden now, the tiller would sink in the mud. Our ground is so soggy mfrom all the rain that we have to put boots on our chickens when we let them out to free range. I was thinking of trying that fabric this year cause I have a true distain for weeding. Does it work well and is it expensive to use.

I plant as early as I possibly can because I'm desparate for my garden..*LOL* Ken actually got the garden tilled during a dry spell when he was home a couple of weeks ago. I watch the weather for the first ten days I see that are above freezing...and while I take a chance that can always change, it's worth it to me. I put the Preen landscape fabric between the potatoes for the exact same reason..but it's so windy out here it blows really easy and I had to weight it down with everything available, so will be returning some of it. Out here it's 7.99 for a 3X60' row. AND I figured out how easy that tiller is...

But having spent an inordinate amount of time last year pulling out every weed by hand, I wanted to take the easy way out!

Now the chance is it'll snow Saturday night, but the seeds won't have sprouted yet so I think I'm safe! And I'm cold now..went out to water everything I'd planted and the wind was cold! Just plant the cold weather stuff early..tomatoes and things like that will come later when the ground is warmed more.

do you put the fabric around the plants also, or just down the rows between the plants.

The rows between the plants..when you're planting seeds it'd be impossible to tell where they come up. I'll probably use it around my tomatoes and pepper plants..that makes sense.

Tomato plants and all pepper plants should arrive this week...:)

And they are here...along with four roses I'd ordered..Think I'll plant them next week as we might get a touch of snow on Saturday..

But I did get my peas, romaine and buttercrunch lettuce planted this morning and a trellis up for the peas. and EVERYTHING is watered..:)

FINALLY! It's supposed to be above freezing at night now...so I'm off the plant my roses..luckily nothing had broken thru the soil in my garden so am guessing I'm safe there...might have to plant some collards today. Still going to wait a bit on the tomatoes and peppers.

Juju: I never tried the Preen fabric, but used [and loved] the Preen plus fertilizer. You have to know the difference between the weeds and what you planted, tho, as it's a pre-emergent. [Lost a few new & unfamiliar seedlings myself, lol]
I never could wait for the Better Boys to be ready, needed some Early Girls, too. :D Have you tried any of the heirloom varieties?

And the roses are in the ground...I'll use the fabric around them and think I'm going to weight that down with stones.

You've gotta be real careful what you sprinkle on the ground up here...almost never have a day without wind..so I'll be tilling and pulling between the rows that I didn't put the fabric down.

Yep...I did heirloom tomatoes last year...some were really sweet and some were rather acidic. Should have saved the seeds on the good ones!

So I'll be sticking to the early girls..will use most for canning anyway..something about yellow tomato soup just doesn't look appetizing..*l*

If you get tired of weeding, hold the shaker can of Preen close to the ground, so it doesn't blow away, [though it's not real light weight], and wet the ground so it stays.
I like weeding - but I imagine my gardens were nowhere near the size of yours, lol.

That would have been good. I used to find it funny that I couldn't pick flowers from public gardens, but no one minded at all if I deadheaded them [for the seeds], lol.

Neither does bean dip, come to that, but I like it anyway. If the yellow ones taste good, you could always add food coloring...[it's the streaky red/yellow ones that grossed me out. And pink - tomatoes should not be pink!]

Got the collard greens and green beans planted and it's watered...hope we get that rain tonight cuz it's just so much better for the garden!:)

This puts me about the half way mark for planting the garden...not bad for May 3rd...
