Love What You Do

Last week many celebrated Valentine’s Day with those that they love. At least that is what I hope they did! We were home so we did what we do best… we went out to dinner. The holiday of Love got me to thinking about the old saying, “Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.”

How many of you have worked at a J-O-B that barely paid the bills but you went in every day despite the fact that you really did not enjoy the work at all? I’m sure many of us have been in that situation. What was it about the job that you did not like? Was it the work? Was it the people? Maybe there was too much politics in the workplace?! Whatever the reason may have been (or maybe still is?), finding and doing what you love makes life so much more enjoyable. There is less stress involved too.

Dave has had only 3 careers in his entire life. He worked in a manufacturing plant for a short time. He thought he was on his way to doing what he wanted when he got laid off. Then he went to what he knew. He found a job in a print shop. His grandfather had a printing business that Dave used to help out in as a kid. He was very good at it. He only worked at 3 different print shops in over 25 years (not counting the family business). When he was “downsized” from printing he finally got into what he loved…driving truck.

I, on the other hand, had many different jobs. I worked in a mattress factory while in high school and college. I was a teacher for a couple of years. I worked in an office in the financial district for a while. I also worked at a distribution center for a major pharmacy chain. In all of those various jobs I was restless and searching. For what, I had no idea. I just wanted to be my own boss.

It finally happened in 2012. We started our little business. At first, I kept working at a job I did not like at all. After a year, I just up and quit. I had had enough! Neither Dave or I have ever looked back. In fact, in hindsight we wish we would have started driving 25 years ago when we got married.

Dave always says that he likes the view out of his “office” window. In printing there were no windows. Now the semi gives him views that he enjoys every day. While there are always challenges that go along with owning a business and working so close to one another, we can honestly say that we love what we do. And I hope that you can say the same. If not, move on! Life is too short to be unhappy.

Here’s wishing you millions of safe, profitable and HAPPY miles!
