Bottle Necks
The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) released its 14th annual list highlighting the most congested bottlenecks for trucks in America for 2024. The complete list has the top 100 in the country listed. We will provide a link to the entire list of 100 but want to cover just the top 10.
So, do you pass thru any in the top 10? If you so, do you agree that they are the most congested.
- Fort Lee, NJ: Interstate 95 and State Route 4
- Chicago: I-294 at I-290/I-88
- Houston: I-45 at I-69/US 59
- Atlanta: I-285 at I-85 (North)
- Nashville: I-24/I-40 at I-440 (East)
- Atlanta: I-75 at I-285 (North)
- Los Angeles: SR 60 at SR 57
- Cincinnati: I-71 at I-75
- Houston: I-10 at I-45
- Atlanta: I-20 at I-285 (West)
Well, anyone seeing a pattern? We know we want to stay away from Atlanta and Houston. Those two cities have way too many in the top 10. So, here is a suggestion you might look at a few things to maybe make it easier to get through these bottle necks.
You might look at your timing you are going to “hit” these cities. If you have extra time to get to where you need to be just stop short and take a break. Let the traffic clear out and then you might just be able to move through without hitting that traffic. We do this all the time. If we can we plan our load pickups that makes our timing hit these cities between midnight and four am.
Another option is look for alternative routes it might add a few miles and “time” but just think of the time you might save if you do not hit those bottle necks at peak times.
Interesting stats from their study were. Traffic conditions continue to deteriorate from recent years, in some instances due to work zones resulting from increased infrastructure investment. Average rush hour truck speeds were 34.2 MPH, down three percent from the previous year. Among the top 10 locations, average rush hour truck speeds were 29.7 MPH.
