Daily Donuts
I haven’t treated myself in a while; actually not since Round Rock Donuts a couple months ago. I ended up near Burlington, North Carolina after a good weekend of freight and went looking for Hursey’s Bar-B-Q--I found Daily Donuts. My theory of modern donutry is that the major name donut makers have all turned to making politically correct donuts. Just like the dying french fry, the treat is sacrificed to please some fussy-pants who was never going to eat the thing before or after they peed on it. We the people end up with papery, dry or crumbly donuts. I know I’m not dreaming of a past that never was, because Daily Donuts just showed me this morning the light, fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth donut I remember. Years ago I would have downed the whole box in one inhale. Fortunately, my body regulates me better these days. I barely handled the one of each choice I picked—plain glazed and plain white cream filled. While they have a whole case of cute choices, I use plain as my gauge. It has literally been decades since I had donuts like this. I would have been satisfied by one, but I wanted to check both of my choices fresh off the rack. And the cream filling is filled to order, “I want one of those, filled with that.†The photo is not a trick. That is the same size box the other shops use for their dozen. I’ll be back.
Daily Donuts is a regular looking shop in a regular looking shopping center. Graham, North Carolina. I-40, exit 147, south ¾ of a mile on the right.
