Is there any way to check the rear axle beyond looking for a leak? It's just a solid piece of metal bolted on.

I would be skeptical but still look into it. You have to filter through a lot of crap starting out in ownership in this industry. Could be a great investment for a team, may not be either. If I were starting I would look into it. I was uber skeptical of Expediter Services path to ownership...

Mine are like the black one pictured below. I thought they were the new style. I saw a volvo with the one pictured with the red plug. After some research I think these are the stemco 's y'all are talking about. It was much easier to see the level in the volvo's (redstyle) hubs.

It might have been the cap they showed in the pretrip materials for the state of Louisiana. I have only seen it a couple times since then. It's like a flat piece of glass with a lil 1/2 red plug in the center. It's very easy to see what the level is. My truck had the plug that's 1 1/2 inch...

I guess if the truck is near the end of life with your carrier it may not be that bad. It is harder to fill seats on older trucks.

Race car trailer with tall sides and roof comes to mind. You may could get away with conventional pull but the gooseneck will be much easier to control. Make sure you get dexter rubber torsion axles. Leaf springs will beat your cargo up to much. Also, you can get 2 high capacity axles or 3 lower...

The carriers may get away with claiming it's not superficial when they have to speak to English only speaking people on the phone. But other in house jobs, accounting for example, may not hold up to these crazy litigations.

I saw that and am torn on this. I was ok going with tk, but ended up with a carrier supra 850. I like that I turn it on, set the scale then temp and it works. I've talked with a few tk people and they say all the tks digital interface and need for updates tends to make them sometimes unreliable...

My new truck had the plastic Crome cover. I took them off today and won't be putting them back on. They look better but I'm not going through that daily to check the hub oil.

Scored a load and learned how to check hub oil. It's been a good day.

I pulled the little plug out and I could see that the area around the plug is supposed to be see through but it's soo dark you can't. The fluid level was up to the plug. If I added a drop it would pour out of the plug opening. Is that how it is supposed to be?

See. That makes a difference. I think your making good money when your bringing in $10,000 a month after job expenses. Good money is a very poor term because it means a lot of different things to each person.

Good points. I don't know how to check hub oil. I just look at rim for anything suspicious but other than that I assume all is well. I asked a while back about this on the forums and no one had good advice about it. I think most people wouldn't know how to if we were able to. I can't imagine...
