    Best ST box size??

Let me say this though. If you have a unit that is paid off, is making money, and it isn't unusually hard to keep it loaded, then I would say to keeping running the wheels of it while you save for that next purchase, and/or you find the "ideal" unit.

Signing on with more than one carrier

A CMV running for two or more carriers is a compliance nightmare. It's really just the vans doing it OTR. -Who gets your logs? -Insurance must be filed under the carrier name. -IFTA stickers? -Who files the IFTA? -IRP and UCR. The craziness would be nonstop.

    Best ST box size??

Bentley, When you hear people discuss their 2-6 skids loads they are always being offered, they are telling you what they see, based on the butt end of the elephant. Dispatch is only going to offer you what they know you can haul. As the carrier owner/dispatcher for my company, I see 2-6 skid...

    Newbie Questions PLEASE

I agree with Lawrence's assessment. I will add that, as far as the truck goes, you won't know until you run it. Also, making a living is possible. A lot of factors weigh into this though. Learning what loads to accept and not is always a factor. Ask the owner for help. The good thing is...

    Cat C10 Question

I have a C-10 in the truck I run personally. I have not heard of the substitution you spoke of. Doesn't mean you can't though. Any advice from the a Cat authorized mechanic besides full replacement or reman?

Signing on with more than one carrier

Possibly. But why would you spend your time trying to book a truck for one of your own customers, that very well may disappear at the time you think you have a load secured? "Oh by the way, so-and-so just offered me a longer load than the one you are offering." I know there are those who will...

Signing on with more than one carrier

This policy always troubled me for a couple of reasons: 1.-A lease by its very nature, involves only one recipient. Imagine if you had leased a Lexus for your spouse, and one evening some guy showed up with a set of keys, attempting to take the car. His response is, "I have a lease for this...

How much insurance do i need to oparate cargo van under my own authority.

FMCSA requires a minimum liability of 300K for any vehicle under 10,000 gvwr. Add $50,000 cargo insurance required if you set up as common carrier rather than contract. The real question is what your customers require. If you want to deal with the major expedited carriers, they require 1 Mil...

    SW Ohio (Cincinnati/Dayton) Recommended Carriers

Well, I am the owner/president of a small carrier (full disclosure). I own a few trucks but have no openings right now. We have no other fleet owners here, only o/os. I think the first step would be to contact a carrier, get approved with them, and them they can connect you to a fleet owner...

    SW Ohio (Cincinnati/Dayton) Recommended Carriers

Lots of expedite carriers have terminals, even if you don't visit them often. Many carriers have large warehouses and do expedited distribution. They get truckloads in, break them down and shoot them out everywhere!

    SW Ohio (Cincinnati/Dayton) Recommended Carriers

You live in the expedite mecca. Lots of companies have freight in and out of there, because there are lots of places that use expedited service, ie. manufacturing, in that area. The bigger concern will be reasonable expectations for getting home, as well as a company who whose dispatchers will...

    SW Ohio (Cincinnati/Dayton) Recommended Carriers

Any reason why the carrier must be based in THIS area? If it's OTR work, the carrier can move you from wherever to wherever. No need to visit a terminal every time, like you would with your local courier company.

    1.20 /mile expedite freight

I'm sure not growing my "small carrier" by trying to run reefer freight, let alone hazmat. Any truck with me would have to run either of those back to back in order to justify the expense of liability insurance, much less equipment. We stay ahead by doing liftgate, blanket wrap and other...
