It's a Team's Life
One of my favorite places
When we get a load that takes us up I-15 through the corner of Arizona I always hope I am the one driving and the sun will be shining.
As we approach the Virgin River Gorge it appears that we are going to run into the mountains as the road disappears into a solid mountain of rock. There is no delicacy or slow climbing when entering the gorge, we go from a relatively straight road to immediate twists and turns and the speed limit drops to 55 for everyone.
The earth looks as if one day it got mad and pushed hard to create these mountains up towards the sky. The rock layers are something to see as they are at a very steep pitch. It is about 20 miles of breath taking scenery and watching for animals on the road. Once we were able to see mountain sheep near the road totally ignoring the cars.
When I researched this part of the interstate some of the
facts blew me away.
This section of the
interstate in Arizona was finished in the 70's with a cost of $100.00 an inch, an
inch I could not believe that figure.
This was the most expensive road on our interstate system until the Big
Dig in Boston.
Something else I found interesting was the fact Arizona did
not want to build through this section of the gorge due to the expense and
wanted the road two miles to the north in an easier section.
The Federal Highway Administration wanted it
right were it is due to the natural beauty and to heck with the cost.
The construction started in 1966 and when the Vietnam War started the government cut funding 17% and Arizona immediately
stopped road construction.
This put Utah in a bind as they had finished their section
and were eagerly awaiting the arrival of tourists from Arizona.
Utah ended up forwarding their highway funds
to Arizona to complete the project that was finished in 1972.
