LOUISVILLE, KY –The Trucking Solutions Group is partnering with the American Red Cross to sponsor the first blood drive at a major trucking show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2011 during the Mid America Trucking Show.

Those attending the show at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville, Ky. are invited to stop in Booth #91470 and donate with no appointment needed.

“Whenever there is a crisis or a need within a community, truck drivers and others within the trucking industry are some of the first to step up and respond,” says Linda Caffee, professional driver and chairman of the Trucking Solutions Group Driver Health Council. “We’re all in this together! This blood drive provides the needed supplies to insure that the American Red Cross can respond when they are needed.”

When we had our “normal” jobs we gave blood as often as the Red Cross was in town along with many other donors.   The American Red Cross would come to our small area every few months and many of us were able to take time off of work to give.   Both Bob and I found this to be worthwhile and a very easy process.   Once we moved to Saint Louis and stayed out on the road as long as we do we found it is difficult to schedule time to give blood.

During conversations with other drivers we found out that many do not know their blood type or have not had the opportunity to donate blood.   I was talking about these problems with my oldest daughter who suggested we pursue having a blood drive at a truck show.   This was a novel idea, as I had never heard of such an event happening.

Our group contacted Toby Young of MATS to discuss the possibility of putting this on at this years truck show.   Toby was hesitant and did some research of his own to see if this event was feasible and what other venues have this event.   What he found was nothing!   This has not been tried before so we are groundbreakers.

Toby agreed to a booth space and letting the Red Cross come in on one day to see how the event will be attended.   The American Red Cross will be bringing their bus and will have limited space so it will be first come first serve.   We will have a sign up sheet so that everyone that wants to give blood will be on the list and I hope we are overwhelmed.   Stop by register and say Hi!

Many of you know or have heard of Lily Williams who was a member of the Trucking Solutions Group.   Lily and her husband Charles are leased to Forward Air and Lily has been very active in educating other drivers on living healthy. Lily was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and is in a hospital in the Las Angeles area.   Lily has been in a coma for over six weeks and has needed blood transfusions.   We are in a dangerous profession and we never know when we might be in need of blood ourselves.   While we are healthy and can give we plan on taking every opportunity to donate.   Please join us at MATS and give so others can live.
