Yep time for a strike - thanks GM!

I got a call just now telling me that if I want to go to a GM plant, I will have to cross a picket line - the UAW has a strike going on.

If you remember the '76 strike and live here in the Detroit area, it may be wall to wall coverage of this strike.

Greg,

I am just going to remind them that I just bought a new 2008 GM van so I could help preserve their way of life.:+

Wonder if they will let me pass?

yesterday I read that they were close to an agreement. what happened?

I remember driving by a GM facility in Flint, must have been 1998 and seeing all the UAW members picketing. I had a delivery to the technical center. When I got there, no picket line, but the guard called the engineer who's name appeared on the packing list and he came to the gate and received it. It was a 5 pound styrofoam bumper innards.

I myself would not cross a picket line, not because I am pro union but because pickets tend to get very irate at anyone crossing their lines to deliver anything that could keep the plant running even in a limited mode.

Damage to your vehicle is a very real possibility, and the risk of damage is just not worth it.DD.

I worked for a non-union LTL carrier during a Teamsters strike. We didn't cross any picket lines but did manage to pick up an unusual amount of sharp steel in our steer tires.

I wouldn't give two cents for every union in the nation. I have relatives (in laws) at GM plants. They are EXTREMELY well compensated as is. The union thieves (that's the union leadership for those who don't know) just want a bigger pot to steal from. Unions have totally strayed from their original purpose and any good they did and haven't been worth two cents for decades. Are we supposed to be stupid and not do our job just because they are stupid and listened to the thieves and went on strike? Why should I lose money for them? No, loyalty to unions should have gone out the window decades ago. It is ridiculous to support them now.

My stepdad was the union. The IBEW, which is for electrical workers. They never had a strike in Memphis. They worked under a no strike clause. The funny thing about is they go on strike then when their plant gets shut down and sent to Mexico they'll wonder why and want to cry about it. Those UAW people don't know how good they've got it compared to everyone else. Until they mess it up.

Well like many of you, I do alot of auto parts. I wonder if anyone in those unions care how much or if my family will be damaged by this strike. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, maybe I should go in as a scab and work to suppliment my income.

Most(not all) UAW workers would not know a job if it bit them in the #####. I would not support thier strike for any reason. just a bunch of over paid cry babies for the most part

I was at a Ford plant in Avon Lake, OH. Waiting to get unloaded. I'd been there maybe 30 mins and they hadn't even started on me. I saw a guy just sitting on a fork lift doing nothing and asked him what the hold up was. He said the guy that unloaded the trucks at the door I was at was in a meeting and it would be another 2 hours. I asked him if he could unload it, and he siad that's door 6 I only take care of the trucks at door 4. I said well that door is empty I'll move my truck. He said he still wouldn't do it because then he would be over work load. Then the lazy sucker sit there until after the guy got back and unloaded me and still hadn't moved that lift. Must be nice. Everywhere I've worked before you get fired for that kinda attitude. They deserve what they get. At least Mexicans will work. Or maybe they could move it down here. Plenty of people down here would work thier arsses off for that kinda money they make.

It is tough to be a competitor when you pay the guy with the broom 40 dollars and hour. Then they want job security and wonder why they move plants to Mexico.
Car lots currently have plenty of inventory, so the union is saving GM a fair amount of money.

I wouldn't miss out on a load because they were on strike. If they damage your vehicle they would be held liable. It's not they are above the law just because they are on strike. Another thing to. The steel workers aren't a whole lot better that the auto workers. They'll sit around and not start loading trucks until they know they won't finish before overtime kicks in. Had that happen to me a few times.

I agree with Leo and the others. I am so sick of being fed the b.s. about the poor American Auto Worker. As a vet, (and the son of a Korean War vet), we would never think about buying a non American car. Then my dad had problems with three American new cars in a row and the customer service was horrible, so he jumped ship and I was mad at him. Then I started expediting, and put I face to these UAW members, and for the most part it was a very nasty face. I've had a full truck almost unloaded in KC, with maybe 1 skid left, and shift change came and was told I have to wait a few hours, and I'd "better not touch that skid". In Shreveport, I asked nicely, (I know how to play the game), of an approximate unload time after I showed up on schedule. I was told that "It will be when we get to you, and if you ask again it will be tomorrow" After that I bought a great Japanese car with the attitude, why should I care about the "American Auto Worker" when they don't give a crap about the Independent American Trucker and their families? (Saturn in Spring Hill is an exception, they are always really nice)

Just to be the devil's advocate, here: how much do the 'suits' on the other side of the table get paid? And, how much of that do they really deserve, judging by their performance?
