House Republicans Cannot Resist Dysfunctional Performances

"House GOP members are preparing a motion to expel Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., amid his renewed threat to pursue a motion to vacate House Speaker Kevin McCarthy."

With the circular firing squad the House Republicans have now formed, the Democrats may be able to get rid of a disliked Speaker and a disliked member with little to no effort, and no political cost.

Let the Republican insanity play out to its logical conclusion.
Let the chaos reign!
And let the voters fix this s** t in 2024.

He was cleared of that. Pesky fact.
What exactly do you mean by "cleared?" As far as I know, there was an investigation, and then nothing. I know of no official action saying Gaetz was cleared. But I also know of no official action saying the investigation found reason to charge Gaetz.

In this matter, my sympathies lie with Gaetz. In a highly unusual move, DOJ confirmed it was investigating Gaetz for alleged sex trafficking a minor. It seems grossly unfair to me to do that, and then after months and months have elapsed, not confirm that the investigation has been closed. While Gaetz party-animal behavior is well known, it seems to me that if there was anything to be charged as a crime in this, it would have become known and charged by now. If DOJ is going to announce the investigation, they should announce its end too, when they come up with nothing.

I think DOJ blundered here. They never should have confirmed an investigation was underway.

Gaetz is a loudmouth who will eventually fall in line when McCarthy gives him some minor concession.
With Gaetz openly calling for McCarthy's removal from the Speaker's chair, and making that motion this week, how amenable do you thing McCarthy will be to giving Gaetz anything? At some point things like these become personal, and I think we may have reached that point now.

What that means is they couldn't prove guilt, but didn't want to publicly admit it. This is similar to the bizarre statement issued by William Barr about the conclusion of the Mueller investigation, which said "The Special Counsel states that 'while this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him." (bold emphasis mine)

Maybe they'll issue a statement declaring that they couldn't prove him guilty of anything , but they still think he's a pervert.

They put two top prosecutors on the case to investigate.
And officially decided not to prosecute.

Maybe. But there have been times when DOJ has unambiguously notified investigation subjects in the past that charges will not be filed. I'd like to see them do that in Gaetz's case.
Maybe they'll issue a statement declaring that they couldn't prove him guilty of anything , but they still think he's a pervert.
I'd be happy with the first part. No need to mention the second part.

I was not aware of that news story. Thank you for providing it.

I'm glad to learn DOJ made this announcement. It is the right thing to do, even as it was wrong to confirm the investigation in the first place.

That said, there is a major difference between being "cleared" and not being charged.

For readers, the report says in part:

"The Justice Department has informed lawyers for Rep. Matt Gaetz and multiple witnesses that it will not bring charges against the Florida Republican after a yearslong federal sex-trafficking investigation.

"Senior officials reached out to lawyers for multiple witnesses on Wednesday, a source familiar with the matter told CNN, to inform them of the decision not to prosecute Gaetz.

"The final decision was made by Department of Justice leadership after investigators recommended against charges last year."

Speaking of nonsense, SCOTUS today jettisoned a lawsuit attempting to disqualify Trump based on 14th Amendment claims. This should clear the way for similar nuisance cases to be tossed as well.

The case that was not taken up by SCOTUS is quite different than the ones filed in Colorado and Minnesota. The Supreme Court will likely see this issue again and the response will likely be different.
