What Truck Parking Changes Have You Seen With New HOS?

One way it makes things more dangerous and I am guilty of this lately, but driving faster to beat the 8 hour mark. If I am doing a 8.5 hour trip where I was running 60 mph in the past, I am now running 65-67 to try to deliver before the 8 hour mark then drive off duty to the truck stop.

Thats a high rate of consumption with my truck..LOL
Thinking if I logged those speeds the safety man would be sending me a lil note on my monthly log book aduit.

Why would you do that ??why not take the half hour break?? That is on you...

I knew it was in there somewhere Turtle..I also knew you would fnd it :D
With this lil 30 min issue I figure if they want to catch me with this chicken sheet stuff they are going to get me doing something much worst so wiping my windows down isnt much a concern to me.

Well he's the one who's complaining I don't know? He's the one who said he's driving faster than he wants to?? Maybe he means average speed

If it is the difference between being late or on time, getting unloaded today instead of tomorrow, making it to the truckstop at 4:30 or 5:00 for parking, getting through a city at 2:30 instead of 3:00 you only have one option.

Off duty not driving means I am free to do as I please..The cowboy in me says if I want to clean my windows/put air in my tires etc etc I say be da** with the rule book..Im doing what I want to do while off duty. Yep wont be long and we all will be criminals.
Someone show me a law that says I cant check my oil while off duty...

From the FMCSA web site:

On-duty time means all time from the time a driver begins to work or is required to be in readiness to work until the time the driver is relieved from work and all responsibility for performing work. On-duty time shall include:

(1) All time at a plant, terminal, facility, or other property of a motor carrier or shipper, or on any public property, waiting to be dispatched, unless the driver has been relieved from duty by the motor carrier;

(2) All time inspecting, servicing, or conditioning any commercial motor vehicle at any time;

(3) All driving time as defined in the term driving time;

(4) All time in or on a commercial motor vehicle, other than: i) Time spent resting in or on a parked vehicle, except as otherwise provided in §397.5 of this subchapter;(ii) Time spent resting in a sleeper berth; or(iii) Up to 2 hours riding in the passenger seat of a property-carrying vehicle moving on the highway immediately before or after a period of at least 8 consecutive hours in the sleeper berth;

(5) All time loading or unloading a commercial motor vehicle, supervising, or assisting in the loading or unloading, attending a commercial motor vehicle being loaded or unloaded, remaining in readiness to operate the commercial motor vehicle, or in giving or receiving receipts for shipments loaded or unloaded;

(6) All time repairing, obtaining assistance, or remaining in attendance upon a disabled commercial motor vehicle;

(7) All time spent providing a breath sample or urine specimen, including travel time to and from the collection site, to comply with the random, reasonable suspicion, post-crash, or follow-up testing required by part 382 of this
subchapter when directed by a motor carrier;

(8) Performing any other work in the capacity, employ, or service of, a motor carrier; and

(9) Performing any compensated work for a person who is not a motor carrier

There have been times where the new rules motivated us and made it more desirable to drive faster. That does not mean violating the speed limits. It just means driving faster than we normally would if the new rules did not exist. Our truck is speed-limited to 65 mph. The down side is, increased speed means increased fuel consumption to drive the same number of miles.

I don't drive faster. I drive the same speed. It has already cost us profit on loads. In one case 40 minutes of added reefer time. In another case we had to sit over night because we were unable to make a delivery before the consignee closed.

It is what it is. Whether or not we make a profit is of absolutely no concern to the government, neither is safety.

This is why we should be paid more under the new rules, but from a shipper's point of view, since our productivity has been reduced, we should be paid less.

Fedex has just enough time to stop for fuel built in and still arrive 15 minutes early. So even If I stop for the 30 minute break and im late we dont get paid. According to one of our ops guys they dont set the time fedex does so it will probably never be corrected.

For example pick up in Atlanta to Memphis 384 Miles. They give 7.5 hours to complete. This does not include fueling,traffic or construction. Now add in a 30 minute break that fedex doesnt account for and you get a late load and no pay.

So no ken this is not on me.

Then it is on your customer...

As I've said before I'm glad you know more about how my company and their customers operate than me. Where am I supposed to park for 30 minutes anyway when I don't depart customer until 7 pm anyway? Hell rest areas are filling during the day in most places I run. Truckstops are filling. On ramps get a ticket, so then what am I supposed to do.

That B***h in Washington doesn't care about that. So I drive faster than usual to make up. Not speeding but definitely faster than before. I've gone from 7.7 mpg to 6.8mpg trying to stay on schedule.
