"Layout,
Not a lot of people actually made money. The ones who really cleaned up were the workers who had all the overtime in '42. Once the '43 tax changes were active, you saw taxes as high as 95% being applied to a lot of profits."

Yeah, forgot about those massive taxes. Get ready for them again. They are on their way and so is the unemployment that goes with them.

This might be your "major conflict" in the making if the Iranians are stupid enough to follow through with their threats:
Sun Jun 6, 3:08 pm ET
TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards are ready to provide a military escort to cargo ships trying to break Israel's blockade of Gaza, a representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Sunday.
"Iran's Revolutionary Guards naval forces are fully prepared to escort the peace and freedom convoys to Gaza with all their powers and capabilities," Ali Shirazi, Khamenei's representative inside the Revolutionary Guards, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Mehr News Agency.

And here we go...

Iran's Red Crescent Society will attempt to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza in the next few days, following deadly clashes last week between aid workers and Israel's military. An official close to Iran's Revolutionary Guard also says the unit could take part in "protecting the ships," as well
Iranian Authorities Prepare to Send Aid Ships to Gaza | Middle East | English

The gambit here is plain as day. Just as the Turks tried to break the blockade with ships full of clothing, food and medicine, the Iranians will do the same thing except with a military escort to dare the Israelis to stop them. If there is a confrontation, the Jews will be accused of preventing humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza. If they back down and open the blockade it won't be long before munitions will be packed under the medicine. So far, not a word from our feckless president. Hopefully, some world leader will convince the Iranians to abandon this foolishness. It appears the red phone in Washington DC has its ringer turned off.

Sabra and Shatila massacre

Sabra and Shatila massacre

During the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, while Ariel Sharon was Defense Minister, the Sabra and Shatila massacre took place, in which between 460 and 3500 Palestinian civilians in the refugee camps were killed by Lebanese Christian forces under the command of Lebanese Maronite Phalange militia. The Security Chief of the Phalange militia, Elie Hobeika, was the ground commander of the militiamen who entered the Palestinian camps and killed the Palestinians. The Phalange had been sent into the camps to clear out PLO fighters and Israel forces had been sent to the camps at Sharon's command to provide them with logistical support and to guard camp exits. The following year, Hobeika defected to the Syrians, along with his supporters, and represented the Syrians in the Lebanese cabinet for 20 years, leading to speculation by victims' families that Hobeika was a double agent and that the massacres were a Syrian provication.

The Kahan Commission investigating these massacres recommended in early 1983 the removal of Sharon from his post as Defense Minister. In their recommendations and closing remarks, the commission stated:

We have found, as has been detailed in this report, that the Minister of Defense [Ariel Sharon] bears personal responsibility. In our opinion, it is fitting that the Minister of Defense draw the appropriate personal conclusions arising out of the defects revealed with regard to the manner in which he discharged the duties of his office - and if necessary, that the Prime Minister consider whether he should exercise his authority under Section 21-A(a) of the Basic Law: the Government, according to which "the Prime Minister may, after informing the Cabinet of his intention to do so, remove a minister from office."

Sharon was dismissed by Prime Minister Begin but he remained in successive governments as a Minister.

In 1987, Time Magazine published a story implying Sharon was directly responsible for the massacres. Sharon sued Time for libel in American and Israeli courts. The magazine lost on the evidence, but won the suit in the U.S. court because Sharon could not establish that Time had "acted out of malice", as required under the U.S. law.

On June 18, 2001, relatives of the victims of the Sabra massacre began proceedings in Belgium to have Ariel Sharon indicted on war crimes charges . In June 2002, a Brussels Appeals Court rejected the lawsuit because the law was subsequently changed to disallow such lawsuits unless a Belgian citizen is involved. Elie Hobeika, the Phalangist commander who ordered the massacres, offered to go to Brussels, possibly to testify against Sharon, but he was assassinated by a car bomb shortly thereafter.

"A bellicose man who seemed to be chomping at the bit to start a war." President Ronald Reagan describing then defense minister Ariel Sharon in his autobiography "An American Life," chapter 58.

"As one who fought in all of Israel’s wars, and learned from personal experience that without proper force, we do not have a chance of surviving in this region, which does not show mercy towards the weak "— Ariel Sharon, as Prime Minister, October 2004.

End the foolishness?

Come on OVM, get with it.

The situation there is a no-win for Israel and they are doing what they are legally obliged to do under a lot of treaties and to protect themselves. If it wasn't for the international press, Carter and the world that hates them, they would have just wipe the land of all inhabitants and settled it. They are at war with Hamas as we are, they know if they give in on one thing, then it may be too much. Hamas is in control of Gaza, they cleaned house after the 2006 election which forced a lot of Sunni Muslims out of the country.

I think it may end up being another big war there, and we will have to fight. Already Iran and Syria are looking at us and laughing about our great messiah and they will try to provoke us into something but we have very weak leadership. Our leadership wants to "kick someone's a*s" over the oil thing and enjoy big WH parties (sounds like Detroit) and ignore the rest of the world ... pass the rum Paul.

The flotilla wasn't about aid but how to provoke Israel into something. If it was me, I wouldn't have gone on the ships with paint ball guns but just blasted it out of the water after the second warning.

They offered that option to the Turks, routing the ships to the port at Ashdod, from where the goods could have been inspected and gone overland to Gaza. Those on the flotilla refused this option - they wanted the confrontation in an effort to break the blockade - delivering humanitarian goods was secondary.

"...this region, which does not show mercy for the weak."
That part of his quote is very pertinant, and is a fact of which our Boy President should be made aware. The Israelis can not let Hamas use Gaza as a launching pad for their rocket attacks again - they've made that mistake once already. Remember JFK's blockade of Cuba? It was to keep Russian missiles out. The same principle applies in this instance.

As for the Sabra and Shatila massacre, there are other accounts that exist about this incident.

"The Phalangists, whose Maronite Christian president, Bachir Gemayel, had just been assassinated on September 14, entered the camps on the afternoon of the 16th and carried out a 62-hour rampage of rape and murder until Saturday morning, September 18th. They were motivated by revenge for the Gemayel killing and also for the years of brutality Lebanese suffered at the hands of Palestinians during the PLO occupation of Lebanon. [Later information revealed that Gemayel was assassinated by the Syrians, who opposed his alliance with the Israelis, and not by the PLO].
When Israeli soldiers were alerted to the massacre and ordered the Phalangists out, they found hundreds dead, including as many as 35 women and children. The rest were men: Palestinians, Lebanese, Pakistanis, Iranians, Syrians and Algerians."

Iran is talking with Turkey about helping to escort ships to break this blockade. In case some forgot, Turkey is a member of NATO. Iran is a terrorist enemy country. Turkey might get into bed with them. Then what? See what the "Boy Wonder" is getting us into with his weak, snivilling idea of what we should be doing? Weakness breeds contempt and scorn. Not respect. This very well draw us into a REAL shooting war that could involve Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. This "Jerk in Chief" needs to go. NOW!!

Nope, only the scumbags need controlled. I tell you again, go talk to your uncles. You only have TWO choices in this world as it is today, fight EVIL or be taken over by it. There is no middle ground.

Hey OVM, not to yank your chain but I offer to take you to some of the places I been to in Africa and show you what WE did there to help them. Maybe there are places where we failed but in the years that we have been a country, we have been more of a positive force for the people of the world than anyone else.

I was listening to a lecture by some Harvard professor who said this "the problem with the US is that we exported our thinking more than anything else. Many will blame us for being arrogant and paternalist but in truth our way of thinking has been proven the best solution for most of the worlds problems." He goes on to explain what he means by using the example of Kenya and other African countries that abandoned totalitarianism and embraced capitalism. Imagine meeting people who never seen a cell phone and then visiting them 10 years later to find out that they not only have cell phones but they are business owners and exporters to the US with a government that has lower taxes than we do.

so again I ask..you want the US to control the whole world?

Dealing with the Iran/Israel situation doesn't remotely resemble controlling the whole world. It's all about dealing with a conflict with which we're already involved - a war with radical Islamists. We have been attacked repeatedly by these barbarians, and now we have a muslim sympathizer in the Oval Office who intends to do nothing about the number one state sponsor of Islamofacism. When the mullahs made the first threat about breaking the blockade on Gaza our govt. should have made clear their support for Israel in no uncertain terms. They should have also made it clear that any Iranian military ships trying to break the Gaza blockade would be sunk - period. Ships supposedly carrying relief goods should be stopped by whatever means necessary to facilitate inspections. It's just amazing that hardly any of the world media seem to understand the seriousness of this situation. It's even more dumbfounding that our govt. and State Dept. stand by with their collective heads in the sand, leaving the Jews to fend for themselves against those committed to their destruction. It's about time that someone in Washington inform the Boy President that we need to treat our allies better than our enemies while we still have allies.

We are not, nor should not interfere with this Gaza/Israel/Iran stuff. We're already spread too thin in Afghanistan and Iraq, with an imminent showdown in Korea. (If you don't believe that, go wander over to the Humvee plant in mishawaka and look at all the Humvees painted in standard green camo) There are very few coming out in the sand colored variety. Let Israel deal with Iran. They'll salt their As*es for em'........We can't do everything. If we get involved with every skirmish that comes down the pike, Layout and his old Rambo buddies are gonna be back on the front line....

There might be some military equipment that is to be sold to the South Koreans, but I doubt very seriously that we'll have significant troops involved in any type of conflict involving Korea or Vietnam again. It's still a bit galling that N. Korea can sink a S. Korean ship killing 37 and hardly an international eyebrow is raised, but all hell breaks loose when Israel stops a ship attempting to break their blockade of Gaza in an obvious act of provocation and nine of the Turkish protesters are killed. Evidently, not many of the world community take N. Korea seriously - let's hope they're not mistaken.

Why not? Aren't they a threat to our freedom? Couldn't they be a money supply to the Taliban? And then theres the nuclear threat. Afraid we'll get our butts whooped again? It was a tie last time in Korea and a definate loss for Vietnam...

The ONLY reason we lost in Vietnam was the CONGRESS of the United States. The ONLY reason we are short of troops these days is lazy cowardly people who suck up the freedoms that our military provides but are unwilling to serve. They are too busy.

Iran is a MAJOR threat to this Nation. We had better wake up. Rambo my butt LRE. We buried our heads in the sand in 1938 and MILLIONS died as a result. The same WILL happen again. Just ask OVM's uncles what THEY think about the U.S. staying out of WWII as long as we did. Does OVM remember telling me about that? Ask the UK if what Chamberlian did after Hitler started moving was smart and helped or hurt?
