The Trump Card...

Trump charges leaked by GA AG website before indictments are officially made. What was it we said about prosecution leaks? Will the grand jury process be affected?

The innocent explanation is a clerical error which was quickly rectified. The nefarious explanation is an intentional leak. Which is true? We don't have enough info to say for sure at present.

Either way, I don't see this error/leak as consequential. It's not going to stop the grand jury from indicting. It's not going to undermine any indictment that comes out. The public impact will be minimal as the indictment itself will capture the news cycle for days.

The DA can easily explain away the posted document as a draft that was posted in error. And the error was immediately rectified when discovered. Beyond that, what reasonable remedy is there? I know that won't pass the smell test with MAGA, but that's the likely way it will work out.

This is an unfortunate development and embarrassing to the Clerk of Court and Fani fans I'm sure. I cringed when I saw the story. It would have been better for all concerned if this had not happened.

Here's the news story about the odd document in question. The clerk of court's office is calling it "fictitious" but offering little more to explain what it actually was, how it came to be posted, and how it came to be removed.

The Fulton County District Attorney's office said in a statement that no charges had been filed against Trump.

Trump Now Faces 91 Charges in Four Criminal Felony Cases

With the the long-awaited Fulton County, GA indictment now out, Trump now faces 91 charges in four criminal felony cases. No additional criminal indictments of Trump are expected in the near future. But as grand juries continue their investigations, and as Trump continues to commit crimes (like yesterday's Truth Social post regarding Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, which was a clear case of witness tampering), the number of indictments and charges could rise.

This sets the news stage for the next two years at least. Trump's Republican primary opponents will get little attention as Trump's legal woes and antics dominate the headlines. There will be a daily drip, drip, drip of reported court developments, punctuated with the occasional blockbuster story. Trump will continue to suffer loss after loss in the courts, with the occasional win. With his court win/loss score at 3 wins and 96 losses, and with Trump now fighting four active criminal indictments and two major civil lawsuits, his prospects for a positive future are circling the bowl.

It is widely assumed that Trump is running for president in hopes of winning the election, so he can use the powers of the presidency to force the DOJ to drop the cases against him, and also use those powers to fight the state criminal cases and civil lawsuits in ways he cannot as a private citizen. That scenario cannot be ruled out, but the election is over a year away and the daily drip of Trump legal news will persist until then, and persist beyond.

Until the election, Trump critics will seize on each court setback Trump experiences and hail it as a major win. Trump's MAGA fans will seize on each social media post or statement Trump makes and hail it as the reason all this should go away.

At some point, frustration will boil to the point where the social order gives way to riots and other disturbances. Or Trump fatigue will set in and he will fade as a person of significance. Or the present divide will persist and Trump will somehow remain on his feet and strong enough to face the voters in Nov. 2024, at which time he'll either win or lose.

In any case, the news for the next several months is going to be all Trump all the time, with his legal challenges dominating the headlines.
