The dancing bear was great. Its like Expedite, sometimes you don't see everything until someone points it out to you in a different way.

Dave next time you see me, hit me up side the head for not going sooner. I'm totaly blown away by the touch screen C-link with GPS built into the system that Panther will be rolling out soon. I am so impressed with this company and they really have everything for the drivers and the owners to make money. I don't know what some people have been told about Panther, but if it's bad they are way wrong. I seen it for myself, the drivers can come in to the home office relax in the drivers room that has showers and washer and dryers all free.

Panther makes you feel wanted.

Good Luck on your move Bruno....Now your over the admin part of P2 Now for the real world....not saying anything either way as I've never experienced P2 1st hand...let us know what your drivers think 3 months down the road .....lets see if all them horror stories of dispatcher ineptness is true.

Glad you are finding so much at Panther to your liking. One thing we have never found at the FedEx Custom Critical office though is to be treated as if you are not welcome. We have found that we are treated very well.
What I see as the home office is just that we are going to a very secure office not a truck terminal. The FedEx Custom Critical offices are just that secure offices that hold all of our records and I would prefer our records and business with FCC to be kept that way. When Bob drove for USX we had terminals all over the country and they were just that terminals with driver lounges and laundry facilities as we were drivers not contractors. When we went to one of the USX terminals we were not allowed back with the dispatchers we had a driver area that we stayed in, if we wanted to talk to our dispatcher and if they had time to see you they might say hi and that was all you got. USX also has a huge office in Chattanooga TN with a few spots for trucks to park and you can go to the main office. Yep there is security there also with no driver lounges, showers and TV’s it is an office.

Linda,
I understand why it is done, it is not just green but a lot of FedEx places that have a 'locked down' feeling to it. Just like my former employer, there was a real reason for it. The problem is records are not an issue in any way, that's an excuse and if any FedEx employee says it they are lying. It is company policy on safety and security, in some ways a good policy but a policy and they need to be honest about it.

Yes it is not a truck stop, but there are some little things that FedEx can do a bit different so to be separate from the rest but again they are slowing down on trying to be more competitive with driver/owner retention. When I went to Green, I had to justify me being there even when invited.

Never said that FedEx Custom Critcal never made me feel that way. I still deal with them on the trucks that are still on with them. Sometimes you don't put all your eggs in one basket. It's just what our drivers wanted. In a few years if I want to go back to FedEx as a driver I will look at that, but it as it stands right now I'm a Panther driver and looking forward to the task of learning this companies ways.

Diane and I have been with FedEx Custom Critical for over five years and have visited the office many times. It troubles us deeply that we have to sign in when we arrive and cannot get into staff areas without escort. I mean, talk about being made to feel like sub-human scum! Come on!

Let's get with it, FedEx, and make your drivers feel welcome. If you are serious about retention (we must be fools for staying five years) you should, no, you MUST, provide at lest nine of the ten following items.

1. Free unlimited truck parking in your lot.

2. A key card that provides access to all rooms in the building.

3. On-demand availability of the CEO in her office, with fresh drinks and hors d'oeuvres on the credenza. Include three staff people to take notes as we speak.

4. Free two-room driver suites in the building that include a jacuzzi and home theater.

5. Free on-demand massage service delivered to the driver suite, provided by company personnel we choose or, at our option, by vendors selected from the Yellow Pages.

6. Free 24-hour golf cart service to shuttle us between our truck and the building.

7. Free unlimited access to the cafeteria when it is open, and company-paid food deliveries from restaurants we choose when it is not.

8. A comfortable driver's lounge with a free bar and a seating host that screens drivers to insure they will only be near others who agree with them. Company staff people are allowed to enter, but only after signing in and putting on an ID badge and steel-toed shoes.

9. Free salon services in the building that includes hair styling, manicure, pedicure and major dental work if needed. Free dental work also provided to the Yellow Pages massage therapists if needed.

10. Free laundry and dry cleaning, picked up and delivered.

Also helpful would be free truck detailing and oil changes provided by mobile vendors that come to the parking lot.

Now that was funny Phil, but a little over board.

I think a drivers room with showers, washer, dryer, soft drinks, coffee manchine, for drivers and owners would be the way to go. Panther already has that for their Drivers and Owners all free Phil.

I wouldn't throw away that tube of Compound W just yet. They all have warts, some immediately apparent on the tip of the nose and some only obvious after an extended time and more intimate familiarity. The honeymoon phase rarely shows the warts. Time exposes most everything. It's great that everything is rosy and cheery right now and perhaps you'll be the one exception who never sees anything else. For the majority, regardless of the company name in the discussions, be prepared for the warts.

Having been to both places, the only difference I see between the two is access to the shower and washing machine. Other than that you need top secret, eyes only, burn after reading, no official acknowledgment clearance to get into either one to see the folks in control. You have a little more access at Panther but that's only to the first tier people. No company is going to give open access everywhere because it isn't needed or warranted. There's nothing wrong with having to set up a visit ahead of time and wait on the person to arrive to escort you in.

Sure, I'd like the magic key to the kingdom, but I know as a population truck drivers have a very large number of lunatics and a Columbine situation could transpire. I know of one instance where a driver called and told a V.P. he was coming up to kill the person and he actually went to the facility. Nothing happened but it's a good indicator of why the security levels are needed. Yes, it also protects the integrity and security of records and personal information as well and that's a good secondary benefit.

In any event, enjoy the honeymoon while it's going on and best of luck with the real life to follow.

I could say the same to you, You just left Panther and moved to FedEx which I'm very happy for you. But for years all I have seen you do is speak highly of Panther as well as of me speak highly of FedEx Custom Critical which I still do. Why the change about the way you think about Panther and why are you putting them down now. Yes Panther has all the things that FedEx don't for their driver to use. But it's also not in their home office either, it's next to their home office.

Remember Panther was owned by two men before Fenway bought Panther a few years back. Those two guys where also drivers and wanted something for their drivers. Am I saying FedEx is a bad company like you are about Panther, NO!!! I just wanted a change and to see how things was over there because of all the years you said it was so GREAT. We still have trucks on with FedEx Custom Critical and will always do business with them. This is not a ****ing contest to see who is the best. I was just telling about what I have seen so far. Thats all.

If you go to the truck stops/ WM in the Seville area , you will not fined many Schneider trucks park there .
Yet they have a large terminal just up the street from the big cat.
only one rezone : they have everything they need in the company terminal !
The same happen with most's respectful truckloads company's.
It have nothing to do with security , nor costumer demands ,its an attitude toward a contractor that is not an employ .

Don't believe what they tell you in orientations , you are not the costumer , you are contracted to satisfy costumer needs , and is replaceable , you are also (once pay for QC,ext.) not an expense for the carrier. (they don't loose money if you sitting ).

in 6 years of being an O/O , have asked many times to see a proof of being payed 100% of FSC. yet to see it once !
Did got manipulated a few times.(yes, included in Panther orientation !).

it's actually a smoke screen ,
an O/O lease to a carrier ,can care less of the contract between the carrier and the costumer ,
as long as you can make money Del. the load ,
you can call it bonuses , FSC,base rate or Paul-Smith ,
I don''t care !
most's shipper don't know what the FSC rate is , and are paying flat fee.,again we don't care ,
if the load pay 800$ and i need to drive 500 mil. so be it !
all one need to know is the costs of operation.

It did felt great at oriantention , it lasted till 2nd dispatch ,
Oh well, live and learn...
all the best in your new adventure , as it will be one...

Dave, I said all companies have warts. I did not bad mouth Panther. They have a number of great qualities just as FedEx does. I'm sure when I've been here a few months I will be seeing warts too. I already see two, their 1960's logbook that uses carbon paper of all things and also has no hours recap on the side and their 1980's qc terminal with tiny screen and no backlit keys. That is about to change I understand and I can only hope the logbook catches up to the current decade as well. Panther is a good company overall, as most are. My point was and still is that all companies are less than perfect. No Panther knock, just a statement of fact about companies in general.

NO back lite keys?

What?

They pawned that off on you. Mine was new, had back lite keys that I had to shut off when I was running at night because it was distracting.

Well the logs should be history soon... right guys? Losing your logs soon?

My kbd unit is identical to all the ones in the training room. The screen has backlight but the keys don't. The screen is about half the size of the ones Panther used. I'll give them credit in that stuff does not run off the right edge like it does with Panther but that's the only positive I can see to this warty little unit.

Apparently you are asking the wrong people with regards to billing. I don't know how you got "manipulated" at orientation.
Unless of course you fell for the "you can be a millionaire" in just six months.

With regards to locked in dispatchers, that is clearly for security, and was indicated as such at the old Roberts building in Akron.
They had several issues with contractors confronting office personel so they locked it down. Haven't been to Green but I would assume the same policy carried over. They also had at one time that policy over at Tri-state as well. Not sure if they still do now or not?

I wonder what other industries are such, that they need to have their staff locked in, to avoid being hurt by their contractors?

I retired from the vending industry and several of them had that practice. Some with employees and some with contractors.
