Scale question

You and I both know, it doesn't matter what's on the side of the vehicle. The only thing that matters is the GVWR.

Now if the vehicle is pulling a trailer then he becomes a commercial vehicle subject to HOS.

Really? So a van with commercial tags and signage that says "Pete's Plumbing", or "Faye's Floral Delivery", or "Ellen's Electrical Supply" has to stop at inspection stations?

If you don't drive like a banshee, then it doesn't apply to you....
....it was an observation of the travelling conditions on the 294.....Drivers don't want to be regulated to death and chased down and then they drive like maniacs ...thus killing any chance for that to happen....if that is not so bright....well....it is what it is...

PS..it had nothing to do with your question...it should have been in another thread....I've done an edit job...sorry bout that

No I don't think he was reffering to you at all.

OVM has a keyboard problem. Some other mods have similar keyboard disease. They are too busy moderating to proofread what i call the "condescending keyboard" comments to us. Now we will both get PMS. (Private msg sent). It hasn't always been so apparent and frequent. May be related to "swollen cranium" disease, often a byproduct of "knowitallitis". :)

New york State has a couple odd ones not typicaly enforced unless you **** off a cop.
For example if your teuck has Dual wheels its a comercial vehical if its carrying a load your using it for commerce and you need a NYS DOT #. A friend of mine got written for that one a couple years ago.

NO smarty pants....it was a response that was supposed to be in another thread....period....nothing to do with moderating....because if one had read it...it made no sense and didn't belong in this topic....it had nothing to do with my so called By Product....;)

Ok, I took OVM's comment as an insult for asking a question. I'm alright now, thanks. And I'm not one of those crazy FIB drivers! Everyone know what a FIB is don't they?

Scales were one of the most confusing things when starting out. Now, if I'm in doubt? I just pull in. So happens we passed a level one inspection during the annual blitz and I never had to pull in at all...but was not sure, so I did.

Do wish they would coordinate this aspect. I think it's the first set of scales entering LA on I-10 that gets me every time. When the light is ON means you PASS the scale and I slow down every time. Seems they coordinate things where they don't belong and leave this portion of the operation all askew...nation wide.

Hey OVM, I am considering moving to Rapid City SD. Is it possible to get loads from there or would I always be driving to find work?

I'm starting out in a CV. My wife retires in about 3 more years and at that point we may move to a ST, more for the comforts then the money. She will want the satellite TV, the A/C, heat and a real bed. Kind of an RV that pays us to travel around the country.

I live 150 miles due north of Rapid City...I do get loads out of the I-29 corridor...in a CV, expect to drive it out of there empty....

Yep

What if it's a Ford E-150 pulling a itty bitty teeny weeny polka dot motorcycle trailer with a lawn mower on it? Does Larry the Landscaper still have to stop at the Inspection Stations?

As far as the green light - red light, bypass - pull-in signs before the scales, why are people in cargo vans and Sprinters even paying the least little bit of attention to those? They're for trucks.

Also, there's a lot of people in this thread who need to learn the difference between a "commercial vehicle" and a "commercial motor vehicle".

If the sign on the road says "All Commercial Vehicles", what does that mean? It means precisely what the state law says it means, and not necessarily what you deduce it to mean. In Kentucky, for example, it means the FMCSA definition, verbatim, of "Commercial Motor Vehicle".

Not so quick my shelled friend...if Larry the Landscaper is in SD he'd better pull in if over 8,000....The signs read Trucks....the little print also says, trucks with trailers. RV's and Buses....

What do you mean "not so quick"? Should I have asked.... the..... question....... sslloooowwwwweeeeer?

Beachbum made an all-encompassing, wide-sweeping and universal assertion, which I replied to, and now you introduce a very narrow possible exception into the discussion.

As for the little print, we need the SD statute that defines "trucks" and "truck with trailers" to know if a soccer mommy van pulling a motorcycle trailer applies.
