Scale question

I was under the impression that being in a CV under 10,000# that we never needed to stop at open truck scales. Right or wrong? I was driving back from Denver CO Friday afternoon and while driving through Nebraska 2 different times I drove by scales on the highway that weigh in motion. Both times these huge electric signs along the road said "pull onto scale" while other larger trucks ahead of me were getting signs saying "bypass scale". Was I supposed to stop at these scales? I did and both times I felt stupid sitting in the line with a CV while big P/U duallys and other CV just drove past. What is the correct thing I should have done? I was running with no load. Thanks guys!

A Cargo Van is not required to go thru scales.
Just drive on by.

The only time that u have to stop is if u have hazmat on board other then that you can keep on moving.

It depends on the state. I believe Nebraska is over 10,000 pounds. Not sure why you tripped the pull into scale sign. South Dakota has recently change their signage to read: all vehicles over 8000 pounds GVWR or maybe it's 6000 pounds, anyway I'm at 9600 pounds GVWR and am required to stop. Wisconsin scale signs state all trucks over 4 tons. I take the "truck" part literally and since I'm in a van, I don't stop. Also the 4 tons part isn't very specific as to whether the reference is to GVWR or to the actual weight of the "truck" when approaching the scale.

State of Wyoming ...if your delivering within the state you must stop and present BOL and drivers license....if passing thru loaded or empty, you don't have to stop....

Moot..it is 8,000 lbs and they don't want us in there....

I'm fine with that, but don't the signs read "all vehicles and buses" or something similar. I got the impression from reading the signs that even a pickup truck over 8000 GVWR would required to stop. Jee, I wonder if they make these signs ambiguous on purpose?

According to a scale guy in SD...it is more for truck trailer combinations...those pick-ups hauling cows or sheep...
why the sign just doesn't say....Any truck/trailer combo over 8,000 Lbs would be more clear...

every once and awhile there will be signs posted...ALL DIESEL VEHICLES.....then I must go in.....they are checking for dyed fuel..

Maybe the correct thing to do might have been to drive around back, park, go inside and get it cleared up from the folks responsible for the sign? Just sayin ....

Some weigh in motion scales can be set up to pull in a set number of trucks, every 3rd truck or something like that.

When in doubt pull through Id rather get waived through than be chased down and have a problem with the creeper cops or get cited for passong a weigh station.

I'm still puzzled by the 'no turn' signs at the end of the freeway entrance ramps - I mean, was that a problem?
When I drove a van, my policy was to stop if it might mean me - better to get yelled at for being dopey than cited for attempting to evade.....

I say there is adifference. in 'scales' There are weigh scales and than there are inspection stops for ALL commercial vehicles. If you have signage and or commercial tags this can and will mean you have to at leaast stop at inspection stations. Like here West Virginia, there was a sigh for all commercial vehicles over 26000# Gvrw.
I think there should be a federal standard so as to not have the confusion, This was supposed to be the reason for the CDL to have 1 standard rule.
O and this is not a know it all comment just something I have determined from the confusion of government beaurcrucy

There is a federal standard of 10,000 lbs and under are not commercial vehicles.

& your point about same federal standard regarding : Ontario speed limiters, CARB emission controls, New jersey motor emission testing, Connecticut snow removing BS, Mass. wheel chock stupidity & Alabama steel coil testing ...?

(it's rhetoric BTW, i'm with you on this one, states cannot exceed federal regulation enforcement over out of state CMV's)

Really? So a van with commercial tags and signage that says "Pete's Plumbing", or "Faye's Floral Delivery", or "Ellen's Electrical Supply" has to stop at inspection stations?

I think the regulations should be more enforced.....across the board....take out the garbage....nail them every chance they get....unsafe drivers seem to be everywhere....they really show up in numbers on beltway where they seem to think 55 is too slow and name thier own speed limit
