Do you remember when

I was thinking about the old times today. So I thought I would start a post called "Do you remember when". I'm sure people remember the old days in this business.

I remember when we had C-link/QC pagers for load offers because cell phones cost to much 15 years ago.

I remember when Lawrence was a van driver at Roberts Express.

I remember when fuel was .89 cent a gallon.

I remember when a 60 inch sleeper was thought to be a big sleeper. My 1st one was a 48inch double bunk sleeper.

Add to the old times. It crazy to see how much expediting has changed in the last 15 years.

Do you remember when we would always have barbecues on the weekends at the truckstops with alot of drivers there?

Do you remember when if someone was broke down, someone would always stop and try to help?

Do you remember when we would get those paper coupons for showers that were good for longer than a week?

Do you remember when we would recieve the green stamps that you would stick in the books for running the toll roads?

I remember when the rate for a van was $1.30, sometimes even more. And it was not that far back.

I remember thinking: Did I take my Ginko Biloba this morning? I can't recall so I assume I didn't. Now I can't remember where I keep it.

I do remember collecting S & H and Gold Bond stamps from fuel purchases and redeeming them for valuable gifts.

I also remember the number 73,280, but it's significance is now lost to me.

I remember when:
  • Cargo Vans with Roberts Express could take a load with unlimited miles.
  • If you saw a truck with a Qualcomm you knew it was Roberts Express
  • Expediters knew that there was safety in numbers and tended to layover in the same areas. Many times it wasn't truck stops. Like the Dennys near the O'hare Airport.
  • There was NO Internet access at any truck stop. At some truck stops you could hack the phone to access your dial-up provider for .99 cents a minute.
  • There was no marketplace or community like EO.
  • Everybody parked their truck in July because of the annual automotive change-over.
  • A Roberts Express division called: Auto-Quick
  • A Roberts Express division called: Medi-Quick
  • A Roberts Express division called: Urgent Freight
  • Expedite Expo was on a parking lot in Michigan.
  • Most truck drivers had almost no (zero- zilcho) understanding what "expediting" was.

Let's see" When I was 16 years old we used to have "price wars" on gas. That was when there was 2-4 stations on every corner and they used to try to "undersell" the others. The least amount I EVER paid for a gallon, that was in 1967, was 19.9. I was making about $40 per week at the time.

I'm not good with math but, if you made $40 and paid 19.9 cents for gas
then making $400 a week gas should be $1.99
Maybe Obama can fix this for us

Don't ask me how math works, I am one of those kind who can add 2 and 2 on a calculator and get 6. LOL!!! Back then I earned my money playing in a band. I normally worked 2 nights a week and made $20 per night. I always have enough money for everything that I had to pay for back then.

I am math challenged also, I gotta use the darn tip calculator on my cell phone to figure out the tip
I think technology is to blame for not having as much money
Satellite or Cable TV 50 to 150 bucks
Cell Phone 40 to 150 bucks or more
Home Phone 50 bucks or more
Internet home access 20 to 100 bucks
Not to mention the cost of all the electronics that are basically throw away. It would cost more to repair then replace.
I could go on but you get the point. No wonder we are all broke. All these things except for home phone are expenses that weren't there in the 60's(Before I was born BTW)

I can remember when we got our FIRST TV. I thought it was cool, something to do when it was raining or storming. The rest of the time I was outside DOING things!! You are right, we DO have just TOO much junk in our lives these days. We no longer have the home phone. We also got rid of the internet at home as well. Do it all mobile so at least we can use it when we are out.
