    Cargo Van/Own Authority Start Up

ANY size. Mind you, I had to have one if I was just going to transport an ENVELOPE across a state line in my Jeep. Now, under 10K, you have a lower insurance requirement, lower cost of cargo insurance ( this is up to who you haul for, uncle Sam don't care - I got 5K for under 35/mo), but...

Not going to be after all...

Here in Chicagoland, I had expected to get into expediting late this year, but it's not going to happen. I accepted a job offer to get back into the IT business, and frankly, the pay's good and working conditions are pretty good, too. It's kinda hard to to resign myself to being an...

    Pay for a sprinter driver

They are. They pay for everything, including fuel, tolls, maintenance and repairs.

    Pay for a sprinter driver

I don't expect there's very many of them, but what should a sprinter driver (not owner, just a driver, paid in cents per mile) normally be paid? Is $0.30 / mile good or bad for a long distance (not local) driver?

    Potentially Expediting

How many doctors can hop in and drive a truck and not kill themselves or someone else? My wife (an RN) has a T-shirt that says "Be nice, I'm the person who keeps the doctor from killing you".

newby with a non-cdl straight truck

Look around. There's often local expediting, 3PL, and others, who hire on local people with trucks and liftgates to pick up and deliver. I'd hire someone to drive the truck and do that for you, to pay for the truck... and keep wrenching to earn a living. I don't know what they pay diesel...

    Gelled up in Youngetown OH

This isn't necessarily true, though it's a reasonable bet. Mind you, I have been fueling up with diesel here in IL all through the coldest of the cold here (-18 and colder) and haven't had gelling issues. And, it clearly says on the pump that it is some percentage biodiesel. But then...

Strange truck seen... Can someone tell me why?

It would have been a VERY large sleeper, then. It just wasn't his day. The street was curved, the docks were at the front of the building, with a sloping ramp up from the street and then down to the docks, fresh snow and limited traction, and he had this incredibly long truck trying to back...

Strange truck seen... Can someone tell me why?

The other day I had to stop and wait a few minutes at a delivery because a semi was trying to get himself situated on some new snow in a slanted ramp. What caught my eye, though, was this: It was a conventional cab peterbuilt, but a VERY long frame. You could have put a big box on the back...

The new Sprinter – Setting standards in quality

Setting standards? Are they referring to the bottom of the ladder, or shooting for 'average'? I am so WHOLLY unimpressed with anything Mercedes or Daimler after my diesel tech days.

Want to know what you're earning?

All other factors being equal, you're absolutely right. But not all other factors are equal. The issue here, is that for emissions purposes, this thing is very detuned. Given the weight and size, it should easily do 30-35 mpg at 55 mph. But it doesn't. It gets a whopping 21-23. But...

Want to know what you're earning?

This has nothing to do with changing laws of physics. It has to do with demonstrating horrendous inefficiency.

Want to know what you're earning?

It's just amazing. None of you seem to realize that "as produced from the factory" a motor can be that inefficient in a speed range. I don't know the CD, nor measured frontal area, so I can't calculate the horsepower required for 50 - 60 - 70 - 80 mph, but I'm sure it takes at least 60 to...

Want to know what you're earning?

Wow. I became a diesel injection tech back in the late 80's. I worked at that until 2000. If you think I'm stupid, then I've never been so insulted in my life. If you think I'm lying, same thing. Either way... Apparently this little club of insiders doesn't want any outsiders.

Want to know what you're earning?

It seems everyone wants to argue... Not only is it possible, it is reality. How's it happen? It works like this: At 80 mph, the motor runs about 2400 rpm. At 60, it runs about 1800. There's something called "BSFC" or "Brake Specific Fuel Consumption". It's the precise amount of...

Want to know what you're earning?

Actually, it changes many things... Boost, turbo geometry (variable venturi turbo), timing, egr amount, number of injections (common rail diesel), all due to rpm and load change. I believe this engine is, for emissions purposes, horrendously detuned, especially at lower rpm's. That's...

Want to know what you're earning?

Utah's good, so is Wyoming and Nebraska. Montana's good, too. The other day, I followed a cop out of town on the Illinois Tollway. 74 in a 65. And he was getting passed. I don't know what speed enforcement is on the tollway, but it seems to be inconsistent. That being said, I have a...
