Our daughter had just picked us up at the Petro in Las Vegas and Bob said, “I wonder what it costs to try drifting?” she thought it was pretty expensive and we decided to look it up.

We found out that the first competition held in the United States was in 1996 and was brought over here by the Japanese.   Drifting is where the driver intentionally over steers, causing lack of traction in the rear wheels of the car through turns while maintaining control of the car.   The competition is a judged event and is judged on line, angle, speed, and show factor.

We were able to watch a competition and they looked as if they were having a blast and the competition was as if watching two cars dance through the corners.   They had to show their ability to drift both directions as well as slow down and complete a small circle around a light pole.   Some of the cars with the bigger horsepower wanted to spin completely around when trying to slow for this obstacle.

We had a load coming right back to Las Vegas in the next couple of days and we decided we wanted to drive.   First we were given a ride with Mark who is in the top 4 drivers in the competitive series.   Next we were given our car and a large circle to get around while drifting.

Our natural tendencies where to bring the car out of a drift and we found it hard to not over steer and straighten the car out.  In a short period of time we could hold the car for a while in a drift.   It was a huge sense of accomplishment when we were able to make the car stay in a drift for several rounds.  I am sure the next time we try this we will make more progress on keeping the car where we want going both directions.

U-Drift is located just south of the Petro in Las Vegas and there is plenty of room to park a tractor-trailer or it is within walking distance.   The price was $75.00 for instruction and six times on the track, which included several laps.

I found some of my information about the history from this site:
