New bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the US House.  It is called the Safer Highways and Increased Performance for Interstate Trucking (SHIP IT) Act.  Introduced by Dusty Johnson (R-South Dakota) and Jim Costa (D-California) on January 24, 2023.

This legislation is proposing the following:

       1.       A temporary tax credit of $7,500 for drivers who log at minimum 1,900 on duty hours in a year.  Who’s adjusted gross income is not to exceed $135,000 jointly; $112,500 as head of household; or $90,000 individually.

       2.       For “new” drivers defined as did not drive a commercial vehicle the previous year.  That person will be eligible for a $10,000 tax credit.

       3.       The SHIP IT Act will free up Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act grants, that can be used for tuition, fees and other costs for entry level drives that get training from a registered Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) trainer that is registered.

       4.       The Act will also try to help improve truck parking.  Giving grants to states and private parking that will expanded existing or create new parking.

       5.       It will also try to streamline the Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDL) testing process.

It will be interesting how this legislation makes its way through Congress.

If you want to read the entire legislation here is the link to it.  It is only 28 pages long.
