When we first said a resounding “YES” to this adventure we had no clue what we were getting into.   It sounded like great fun following a group of bike riders across the United States at approximately 20 mph.   Now with more details the weight on our shoulders is getting heavier.

We were finally able to meet most of the riders and the crew while we attended a class in Green, OH last month.   We have been having monthly calls to stay in touch and to be aware of any changes within the team.   The cycle team is raising money in support of the Akron Children’s Hospital and has raised over $64,000.   To learn more about the riders and their goals see their website http://ohiocycleworkscharities.org/

The group carefully picked their team members and wanted us due to being professional truck drivers and used to sleeping in a moving vehicle.   We primarily will be following the riders in a van giving them guidance about the route, elevation and during the night providing them with a shield from oncoming cars and also to provide lighting.

The rule and route book is over 3” think and will become our road bible once the race starts.   We will be following back roads with two other vehicles; one is a small motor home and one other chase car.   We have work schedules set out for each vehicle with time built in to sleep, to navigate and to drive.   Our crew chief has our greatest faith. Bob and his wife, Carol have researched the rules over and over and are constantly education us on all we need to do to keep from incurring a penalty, which will result in time being added on to the bike riders.

Once the race starts the riders will ride in two man teams until we reach Annapolis.   They will climb Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado and will cross through the deserts.   They will experience spikes in temperatures from bone chilling cold to heat that will cook an egg on asphalt.   All this time we will be riding in a vehicle that is air conditioned and heated.

The team has been practicing together for a few years and has done some races that were over a few days but none as long as this race.   We are honored to be included in this elite group of athletes and will do everything in our power to support the team and keep us moving safely and quickly across the United States.

To learn more about the team please visit the web site and also if possible give them a donation for their charity.   I will be blogging more about this adventure once the race starts, as this is a once in a lifetime event!
