New Year New Computer

I started my PC one day and the screen flickered and split into two screens then went back to one screen, I knew the computers life span was limited. It crashed fast as the next day I was stuck with a split screen and very hard to read.   I took the PC to a Best Buy and was told my video card was bad and if I wanted it fixed they would send off the computer.    This computer shy of being two years old and I was not pleased.

I decided to buy an inexpensive laptop to get me by and look at purchasing a Mac.   I am lucky in this aspect as we have a friend who is a district rep for Apple working with Best Buy stores Mac sales division.   I contacted Brian and after much discussion he figured out what I needed and to purchase.   When I arrived home at Christmas there was my new Mac I have affectionately named Cider.   The name Cider came about after much discussion on Facebook.   Brian and his wife where able to spend a few days with us at Christmas and Brian helped me to get familiar with Cider and get my software loaded.   I cannot say enough on the help Brian was able to give me, as I am not able to take classes on the Mac.

I have had a few problems and have had to call Brian to help me get out of the mess I created.   I also have another friend I used to work with that is familiar with Macs and he helped me out with advice on some software that would make my life easier.

A few of the struggles I have had and am slowly conquering is the file structure.   I started using DOS and file structure has always been important to me.   Trying to find files and save files where I want was driving me crazy.   I now have software called Path Finder, which makes this easier.

I am still struggling with IPhoto.   I have figured out how to attach a photo to an email but have not figured out how to upload a photo to my blogs…  I want to resize a photo and that is something I am still trying to figure this out.

Some of the items I REALLY like about the Mac has been the ease at finding files or information.   I have found some files I thought I had lost on my PC and Cider found them in seconds.   I attached my printer and waited for the messages that the Mac was looking for drivers and nothing happened.   I thought great it is the end of the year and I cannot print.   I looked at my printers and there it was, attached and ready to print.   Unbelievable

I have Parallels Desktop running on the Mac and I am easily able to switch back and forth to use my Streets and Trips and also my Quicken.   I have learned how to switch my printer from the Mac to the Windows area and found that has been a very easy task.

I struggled the first time I loaded a CD and could not figure out how to eject the CD, as there is no button on the side of the Mac.   That took about ten minutes to figure out that there is a key on the keyboard or I can drag the CD to the eject Icon and now it takes half a second to eject a disk.

I feel as time goes on this computer and I will get along great!   Another nice feature is I do not shut this computer off.   When I open the computer it is ready to go no longer do I wait and wait and wait for the PC to turn on and connect to Internet.
