Maintenance Account

Our truck is running on borrowed time right now due to being high mileage.  We have a large maintenance fund or emergency fund for the just in case emergency. Much of the maintenance fund that is not used will be applied as a down payment on our next truck. I was reminded of why we keep such a fund today when we bought new steer tires. We buy Michelin tires and have been very impressed with the mileage we get out of them. These steer tires we are taking off have right around 300,000 miles on them and they were still at 11/32 depth. We took them off now as they are easy to resell to be retreads or for trailer tires. The new Michelin 275/80R22.5G XZA3 tires retail are $450.00 each, mounting and balancing $28.50, and $25.00 dollars FET (Federal Excise Tax) before our discount. It was easy for us to make the decision to get these tires when needed due to the security of having our maintenance fund in place. We are on our way home and as always the truck goes to the shop and this time we will have the overhead fun by our CAT dealer, Bob will check our wheel bearings, and then Bob will look over the truck and fix little things that need attention. Bob's diligence in repairing items that need repaired before it breaks on the road has really saved us a lot of money and heartache. I believe due to his attention to detail that when mechanics hear how many miles are on this truck raise their eyebrows in amazement. Then we tell them our fuel mileage and they want to pull the ECM readout to verify what we are saying. Then we tell them our fuel mileage and they want to pull the ECM readout to verify what we are saying.  This has sure been a good truck for us and the thoughts  of getting out of it to a new truck are exciting but at the same time we sure will miss this one.
