Insurance

Over the years we have added items to our truck that I call insurance, some items are an aid, and some I hope are never used.

One of our biggest insurance items is our LDWS by Takata. The lane departure warning system almost drives me crazy at times and when it is driving me crazy I know my driving is not up to par.   The LDWS sets of an alarm on each side of the truck when approximately ½ of our tire crossed the white line.   If we do not use our turn signal it sets off an alarm and as you can imagine we do not change lanes with out a turn signal.   This system will set off an alarm even before we realize we need to take a break.  This is one insurance item we will not run without.

Safety Vision

We have three cameras on our truck with one mounted on the passenger side, a backing camera, and one mounted near the back of the box pointing at our freight.   Part of our procedure when backing is to switch the monitor to backing view and then switch the truck into reverse.   We use the passenger camera when in traffic and use this as another “insurance policy” to keep from taking out a vehicle in our blind spot.   The camera inside the box has a light and we can check the condition of our freight at any time, which helps when we are sealed.

Tire Pressure Air Monitoring System   (TPMS) we have a sensor on each of our tires that sends a wireless signal to the monitor every few seconds with the tire pressure.   Bob sets the tire pressure and if the tire loses a certain percent of tire pressure we get a light and an audible alert and at 25% los the alert is even louder.   The screen is easy to use and easy to flip through each tire to check the pressure.   We have heard the alarm once and this kept us from ruining a tire.   We hope that we do not hear the alarm again.

On Spot Automatic Chains

The chains are another form of insurance we hope to not need.   In our first year of running the chains we deployed them three times due to the chain law being activated in Colorado and several times when we were off of the highway in an area not cleared.   When pulling into an ice covered truck stop or a rest area it was with peace of mind that we deployed the chains and were safely able to park without slipping.   The chains are another aid that helps to keep us safe on the roads.

Thetford Porta Potti

This is a delicate subject and usually not one discussed around the dinner table BUT it is one of our necessary items in the truck.   We get into areas that either do not have facilities or the facilities are something I do not want to use.   Yes I am Port-A-Pot snob and I prefer not to use them unless they have just been cleaned.   At night when parked it is much safer to not get out of the truck and go inside or to wake Bob to walk inside with me.
