Avoid Criticism

“ To avoid criticism, do nothing,

say nothing, be nothing. ”

Elbert Hubbard (1856–1915)

American publisher and writer

This quote says a lot about the hardship of saying “yes”.   Through my life I have tried it both ways minding my own business and not sticking my neck out and also becoming involved.  When my girls were young they were involved in a lot of activities. My time was spent taking the girls to events, watching their amazing feats of talent, and then we were off to their next activity.

Those that know me now will laugh as I was very bashful and had a hard time talking in a crowd.   As our kids matured and became very outgoing young adults they drug me kicking and screaming with them.   Due to my girls we had no choice but to get involved and I found in time I enjoyed it.

As the girls became teenagers we were entrenched in many of their activities.   We ended up being 4-H community leaders, on our fair board, on our extension agent’s board, as well as 4-H horse project leaders, dog project leaders, shooting sports leaders and helpers on other projects.

Along with becoming involved came criticism and at many points I wanted to retreat back into my shell which happened a few times.   Over time this started changing and positive feedback became louder instead of only hearing the negative feedback.   Listening to the criticism became a building took instead of a sledgehammer knocking away at my foundation.

I never would have thought from saying “Yes” all of the amazing things we have been able to do and how richer our lives have been.   As time has passed looking back over all of the projects we have been involved with as well as new expediters we have worked with and there is much to be proud of.   As the future unfolds who knows were the path might lead by saying the small word “Yes”.

While this is not a path for everyone, both paths are respected, as the person who is not involved is often the shoulder that in leaned on for support.
