Are you tracking PerDiem Correctly?
If we only knew – Per Diem
How do you calculate your per diem day when going home? Are you a rider?
ATBS has a weekly newsletter that is full of good information that can benefit your business. In this week’s newsletter, one of the subjects was per diem and two items caught my attention:
If you are an owner-operator, the rule is simple, you get to claim the tax deduction for each day that you are away from your “tax home”. On the days that you depart and the days that you arrive at home, you must claim a partial day allowance instead of a full day allowance. That is ¾ of the standard allowance.
You can deduct $52.80 for each full day away from home as a driver and $33 as a non-CDL rider. You can deduct $39.60 per partial day as a driver and $24.75 as a non-CDL rider.
So, if you ride with your spouse you can also get per diem. How many riders claim per diem?
No matter what time you arrive or leave home you cannot claim a full day per diem.
