What it's like at Panther

Oh Bruno,

Someone dares to ask him for facts.

again you are blowing smoke.

Dont start on me or Fedex, this your post, and my questions are on target.

Find one response here on EO where I bashed Panther.

You wont. Never will. I only question those who ummmmmmm are questionable

Oh by the way, please notice every word I have used is spelled with an actual letter.

None of my comment fall under crude or lewd, can you say the same dude.

having a big mouth ( your words ) is neither being informed or intelligent.......

Good luck.

What ever you say Dave. You can say what ever you want about me I don't care. But Panther has been a great move for us and your post's come across as a slam. Unlike you I don't feel the need to try to trash someone because of their grammer or spelling. We are not all perfect. I never said I was the best speller and never will, to be honest I'm the worst at it.

Now can we get back to the post

With contrite heart I bow out of this blog, as I am sure, I am insulting someone with
my attack on bruno.

my apologies to EOland.

Dave your okay with me. We can agree to disagree, remember we both have the same name and it's a good one "Dave"

I'm still trying to figure out the reason for the, "And the rest of the story is?" comment. The initial post seemed to be self-explanatory with the exception of the error on detention pay (and the gross error of illusion of perfection at Panther :) ), but this is based on a very small time-frame sampling. Knowing that, there really isn't any "rest of the story" that is needed, or even meaningful, since whatever it might be would also be based on a very small time-frame sampling. From that point on this thread has been a train wreck that was derailed by off-topic comments and questions, starting with the one quoted above.

Right now things are rosey in the Bruno World, and that's great (as someone else has already stated). We all know that will change with time, at least to a degree. Every carrier will do things that drive you crazy. Every one of them, and there are no exceptions to this rule. The trick is to find the carrier that drives you the least crazy. Hopefully Bruno has found his. How much his top three paying loads have been is wholly irrelevant to this and I'm a little surprised that someone would go out of their way to derail a thread with such a silly question.

Thank you Trutle. Your right on everything you said once again. It's has been less than a month to try to compare one carrier to another would be crazy. I was just telling what its been like so far. That's all.

I'm having some trouble understanding the comparison of one year to the next. Last July (2007) Diesel was around $3.00 a gallon. This July (2008) Diesel was closer to $5.00 a gallon. One driver may drive a steady 65 mph to another who stays at 60 mph. How do you compare the results at the end of a year especially when your comparing 7 Trucks?

Track each trucks fuel costs separately...year over year comparison...I myself would the deduct the FSC received for each truck..and you'd get the truer picture of raw costs...Since FSC is only a SUBSIDY and not a total fuel reimbursement plan.

I can think of many Husband and Wife teams that have done the same or even better.
Linda and Bob Caffee come to mind on that note.

In 2007, there were less than 20 trucks in the FedEx Custom Critical straight truck fleet that produced more revenue than us. I know this because I asked and people who are able to run reports at our carrier told me. They did not give names and I did not ask for them. I asked because I wanted to know what other top producers may be doing that we are not.

In 2008, we will not do as well as in 2007. Reason: driver variables. We made different choices in 2008 that reduced our production.

Bruno, if you know the teams who outperformed us in 2007, I' would love it if you to introduced me to them. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet and learn from them.

Let's not make an issue out of our success. We define it in our particular way, just as others define success in their particular way. A team that generates half the revenue we do is no less successful than us, if they define success in ways other than revenue.

We are money motivated and goal oriented. Our first-priority is to make as much money as we can in our chosen truck type and style of expediting. That is why I bug people at FedEx Custom Critical to tell us how we are doing compared to other top producers. It is not to rank ourselves as better or worse than them. It is to learn what the absolute top producers are doing, take inspiration from that, learn their behavior, and -- to the extent it fits our other goals -- do what they do.

Phil I hope you got what you was looking for?

The question I asked was simple and straightforward. Models of the kind of response I requested were offered in reply 12 and reply 15 of this thread. Your non-answer is itself an answer and I will trouble you no further for specifics.

For new readers, let me say again that there is no such thing as the best carrier. There is only the carrier that is best for you.

I talk to a good number of people who are researching the expedite opportunity. Several of them have signed on with carriers other than FedEx Custom Critical. In these conversations, I have no interest in proving myself right about our carrier choice. Instead, I hope to help people be right about theirs.

Bruno, I congratulate you on your step up to Panther. It appears to be a good move to you. But for others, the same move could very easily be a step down. You can praise Panther all you want and will receive no complaints from me. But I get testy when I see you suggesting that your move is the same move other people should make.

It is a disservice to others to grind an ax against a former carrier. It is a service to others and a show of respect to provide factual information that can help others make the carrier decision that is right for them.

This is not cheerleading. It is expediting. It is not about getting people to sign up for your team. It is about helping people find the team that is right for them. It is not about scoring moral victories by coaxing someone from one carrier to another. It is about the satisfaction of helping others make the choices that are right for them.

As the A team suggests, what is great for one person can be the pits for another. In the past,Ive had a truck with Panther, and also Try Hours, not to mention Con-Way Now.I'm still trying to get my head out of the sand from when I was at Con-Way Now.I'm not going to go into the problems with any of these carriers, they just didn't work out for me,although if I lived in the Toledo area.I may have stayed at Try Hours.I was running solo there, and doing ok,just had some other issues, and a chance to get back on with FECC opened. From July 1 thru Dec 31 2005,did $136000 not bad for 6 months, pulling their trailer and not in W/G.Oh, and by the way, only stayed out 10 days at a time.Out 10 days home 4.
So like I said, whats good for me,or someone else ,you may hate.

Subtract the fsc and see what the revenue was in 2007,and do the same in 2008,then you can tell the difference.just figure your gross.By figuring your gross ,you will be able to compare one to the other. With having multiple trucks, and of course more drivers,as each driver drives differently ,speeds and so forth, hard to compare net profit,of course you will see that one truck clears you more money, but does it actually take in more revenue.

Crazy ...... you say ?????

I'd say it's crazy that someone with only one months activity even dare suggest that someone as successful as Phil jump ship to Panther.......now that's crazy.

I have almost 15 years in this business and 21 years of driving,

Brunie,

Not surprisingly, you totally missed the point.

The statement had nothing to do with how many years you got with anyone. Had nothing to do with miles you've driven or how many vehicles you claim to own.

Simply stated : you're in no position to be suggesting someone like A-Team should move a vehicle anywhere. One months service to Panther ain't gonna cut it. Maybe after you've put in your year or two, you'll have proper documentation which would be viewed as credible.

Currently, your suggestion to move a truck is based on nothing more than Freshman excitement.

I don't want to be harsh, and I would hope that anyone who changed carriers would be excited about the move. Helpful happens when someone provides accurate information, and in this particular case, longevity with the new carrier is not required to provide it. Pushy happens when one takes it on himself, without invitation, to tell someone else what is right.

This is a one-time event. I have never before felt pushed by Bruno. I do not think it will be repeated, especially after the enthusiasm wears off. It is no big deal.

Bruno may not be wrong about Diane and me being better off at Panther. I am open to information from all sources. But we need more than Bruno's opinion on which to base a move to Panther or any other carrier. His opinion is influenced by his needs and goals. Our opinion will be influenced by ours.

For those who may be wondering, we are doing more research than chatting it up here on EO. We are talking to recruiters and drivers from other carriers. That started Friday and will continue Monday. So far, no information has been received that suggests the grass is greener someplace else.

For five years we have been happy and profitable at FedEx Custom Critical. Nothing in our recent research suggests it is in our best interests to change carriers or get our own authority. But this bailout business and market meltdown talk has me spooked. Researching the industry anew helps me feel a little more prepared for whatever may happen next.

Phil

I gave you what you gave me, one load. I also said that it was to soon for me to give you the numbers because it has only been a few weeks. I also said that if you want better numbers ask DaveKC or JaminJim. Phil I also said that the team loads wasn't as long as FedEx as of yet. You keep asking for things I really don't feel it's fair to the people of EO to compare. Ask me in a year and I will share the numbers. As for my input on carriers I have earned the right to say how I feel. I have had trucks on with Roberts Express, Tri-state, TST Expedite, FedEx Custom Critical, and now Panther. As for you Phil you have only been with FedEx for 5 years.

Why is that when someone says something good about another carrier the people from FedEx feel the need to say that FedEx is way better each time. Phil I do know what I'm talking about on this because I was one of the blind people at FedEx that did it right along with you and others.

This post was started to tell what we have encountered with Panther so far. Like you with FedEx I want to share with people about Panther. Am I lieing about what we have done with Panther? Nope, just sharing with everyone what it's like. Now as for the loads and pay you can ask the nice people at Panther to show you what my Brother did his 1st week out. Make sure you ask for Adam. I will call him tomorrow and let him know he has our okay to give out those numbers.

Phil we know it's not about cheerleading. If that was the case you would be the head cheerleader with me right behind you when it came to FedEx. So if you think I'm cheerleading well maybe I am. Oh I'm not saying you should make a move to Panther on my say so. That's up to you to check into. I was just saying that is something you might want to look into. But if you don't oh well.

With regards to revenue, the numbers Dave posted are pretty much an average that has been posted by other in the past. Some weeks higher, and some lower. I think to get above that on a regular basis, one may have to broker some loads. Especially during the slower periods.
The only real issue Dave mentioned for Phil was the fact that he is a "C" unit. Panther doesn't have that same restriction of 5,000 lbs. so it is a matter of whether he could be provided more opportunities. Who knows?
Leo stated that was soon to change. Who knows? They were talking about that back when I was there. Who knows until it happens.

To be honest Dave those are better numbers for that truck then at FedEx. The base pay on the truck is a $1.30 per loaded mile plus FSC and any other things that get added in. So I'm sure the pay would be higher on our refer trucks that gets $1.65 per mile plus 100% of the FSC and .50 a mile deadhead.

Unless something has changed the reefer trucks get offered a lot of reduced rate loads so they don't get 30cpm more overall, more like 16-18cpm overall based on the last reliable information I had.

No that isn't accurate now. That was the case when they first started the program. They run at a flat rate now regardless of the run. That got corrected when I had a reefer truck in Elite.
I stayed with dry vans because the revenue was similar to what the reefer was. But, I also work a little outside of the generic system. The reefer truck was too restrictive in a lot of the freight I was doing. Our dry van revenue is similar to what was posted by a WG member earlier. I don't believe it is necessary to elaborate beyond that.
