Weapon at Base makes for a bad day!

Haven't found that out yet...obviously not a regular. Seems harsh since he declared the weapon before the search. Rgardless, his contract will likely be terminated. Kinda sad being some of the places drivers have to go to. I can understand why he might feel the need to carry. When I worked for express in Miami, we had a fellow courier who emptied a clip into his former girlfriend at a parking garage, worked the next day then committed suicide that night. I am aware of FEDEX's policy and agree, but in another job I always declared, then carried my weapon to the pass office and retrieved it when I left without a problem.

in another report he was ticketed and released....the ticket should have been for being stupid.. chance are he knew the Feds policy and if he didn't know it was illegal to carry a weapon onto gov property, he was an idiiot to begin with.

chances are if he doesn't declare, they don't search the truck at all.....dumb....

My last time there, they check my truck pretty good, mainly because I was a FN at that time....and they take security very seriously too...we was delivering a F-18 engine to P & W experimental...they said...when we pull into the compound the gates will close and STAY in your van till someone comes out....well...we pull in and out of habit out I jump..WELL:eek: In short order I had 2 M-16's pointed my way...The soldier yelled out..SIR PLEASE..back in your van....WELL..wanna know how fast a fat guy can heave to.....*LOL*

Well obvious it is something that many like about FedEx :p

Seriously ... though ...

I also been at that base, and a few other places where I'm told without hesitation NO WEAPONS.

My last DOD venture had a lecture to all the drivers in check in, not just informative stating the route, general "this is a military base and you will get arrested if you do ...." but backed up with a sleeper, box and engine search. Questions about my scissors for some reason, surrendering my cell phone and camera and so on. These loads are always preceded by the agent asking me when the offer was made if I had a firearm.

As for understanding someone having a weapon - NFE. As for feeling sorry for the guy - well that's debatable. I know that there are a lot of dumb or rather uninformed drivers on the road.

I think as Phil said something about Safety and how they are proactive, maybe not be the case? I think they need to review their internal policies, make sure that they communicate to contractors first that weapons may not be too cool, then back it up with dispatchers practicing in front of a mirror "do you have any weapons?" By the way I understand Ground and Supply Chain treats this as a termination with no review.

By the way I understand Ground and Supply Chain treats this as a termination with no review.

When we went to orientation, the statement from Patty G. went something like this...Any firearm equals termination PERIOD! She further elaborated that the quickest way to get terminated is to get caught with a firearm. So assuming she and her replacement were/are consistent in their routine, all contractors got the message. I expect to see something over the c-link or VRU message any day.

Now the big $ ? Will FEDEXCC lose the contract over this? As A-Team stated, "Way to go driver."

You're right Bubble. But I feel for the roving safety officer of CC.

They won't lose the DoD contract, the instant this happened, I bet there was a damage control team contacting the DoD telling them "this is a contractor, ..."

Why would you feel for the roving spy officer.... opps safety officer...????

Why call him a spy?

I think it is a great thing to have, especially one who comes from the same background. I think hiring from the ranks is a good thing, especially in dispatching, then you won't get dumba** commands like "so if you go over 11 hours, does that mean you can't deliver it in 14 hours?"

What does a van driver know about truck safety? Did he ever do a log book? How about the mechanics of a straight or tractor? Can he inspect a trailer? Does he know when the slack adjusters need tightened?

Or is it just...your truck needs washed, you need a shave and wear your uniform shirt...the inside of your van is messy...

and I am not knocking the person doing the job, just the need of the position. and it is just my opinion...

well let's see.... I don't know... can't vouch for his ablity to check logs but again some at the company can't do that themselves.

I stand by this premise;

If someone can't check the oil how come they are allowed to drive a truck?

Is it the same thing?

I don't know.

Checking the brakes, can teach anyone to do that.

Checking a trailer, not an issue, look around in the truck stops and tell me what you see?

It doesn't take much to check a truck out, like a safety check or even a pre-trip. I know that some who never drove before couldn't figure out why they needed to purge the air tanks or what the difference was between a fuel cap and a radiator cap.

When it comes down to it, it doesn't matter, I didn't hire him.

Its interesting all of your responses, to a so-called idiot who is perfectly within his rights, to Keep AND bear arms. Maybe all of us who think he is an idiot are the idiots for thinking it is OK for any government to ignore the very document it draws its power from.

anyway just food for thought.

I must say that this was one DUMB driver. I know for a fact that FEDEX CUSTOM CRITCAL had nothing to do with this DUMB driver doing this. When PAT G was there she put the fear of GOD into drivers. They should have never let her go, she was a GREAT lady if you really took the time to know her as I did. I guess they need to bring Pat G back, if she would come.

That was way out on line OntarioVanMan, Terry is not a spy he is just doing the job he was hired to do. The man was in the Navy and did drive truck at one time before driving a van with Robert Express. The man know his stuff and has been in the business a long time.

He may be within his constitutionalrights but he's driving a truck that is leased to FECC and they have strict rules concerning firearms. Couple that with traveling from state to state with each state having different gun laws....not too smart.
