Yet Again, Abortion Rights Prove to be the Defining Issue of 2024

"An Alabama Democrat who campaigned aggressively on abortion access won a special election in the state Legislature on Tuesday, sending a message that abortion remains a winning issue for Democrats, even in the deep South." (Source)

Florida Abortion Rights Ballot Measure Approved by FL Supreme Court

By allowing both DeSantis's draconian 6-week abortion ban to go into effect, and allowing the proposed FL constitutional amendment to go on the Nov. ballot, the FL Supreme Court set up a massive turnout by pro-abortion voters. This ballot question is a proven winner in the six states where it has been presented to voters so far. If the polls are accurate, it will likely win in Florida too.

Drive On Florida GOP!

By coming out strong against Florida's proposed constitutional amendment that would enshrine abortion rights in the state, the FL GOP is highlighting the stark contrast between DeSantis's 6 week abortion ban and the abortion rights the majority of Floridians want. This GOP pot-stirring will motivate abortion-rights voters to vote. Turnout will be high in favor of abortion rights.

A good number of those voters are Republicans who will also vote for Trump. But the high pro-abortion rights turnout will also bring a large number of anti-Trump votes to the polls too. Will that be enough to defeat Trump in FL? I'm not going to say it will be, but that the possibility exists.

Irrespective of Trump, DeSantis and his far-right Republican abortion extremest are in for a drubbing. Their six-week ban is on its way to the dust bin.

Stats and facts, To be precise, researchers estimate there were 1,026,700 abortions in 2023. "That's the highest number in over a decade, [and] the first time there have been over a million abortions provided in the U.S. formal health care system since 2012," explains Isaac Maddow-Zimet, a data scientist with Guttmacher.
I guess thats that..........................insane....

Trump Says Abortion Law Should be Left to the States

"Former President Donald J. Trump said in a video statement on Monday that abortion rights should be left up to the states, ...

"Mr. Trump said his view was that the states should decide through legislation, and that 'whatever they decide must be the law of the land, and in this case, the law of the state.' But he added that he was 'strongly in favor of exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother.'

“'At the end of the day, it’s all about will of the people,' he added. 'That’s where we are right now and that’s what we want — the will of the people.'"
(Source)

While Trump can't be counted on to maintain any policy position for more than five minutes, this clear statement on abortion rights is just that. And to me, it's one that makes sense for him to make. It puts Trump squarely in line with the US Supreme Court that ruled the abortion rights laws should be left to the states. It puts him in line with the three Supreme Court justices he appointed and ruled that way.

This is actually good news for pro-choice abortion activists in conservative states where the laws are more restrictive than the public wants. With Trump saying it's up to the states, a national abortion ban is off the table, and the state-by-state "will of the people" activism can continue. So far, abortion rights activists have a perfect record of winning the day when the issue is put on a state ballot. Now Trump is validating those efforts.

This puts Trump out of step with the anti-abortion extremists, but won't hurt him much on election day. They'll vote for Trump anyway.

On the left side of the political spectrum, Trump's statement will boost pro-choice activist activity in conservative states. They now have Trump's own words about "will of the people" to energize and defend pro-choice activism. That activism will bring left-leaning voters to the polls who will be inclined to vote for someone other than Trump, and state legislators other than those who want to impose unwanted abortion restrictions on them.

Trump Lashes Out at Conservative Republicans on Abortion

"Trump lashed out at Graham and SBA president Marjorie Dannenfelser on Truth Social Monday afternoon, arguing that Republicans who are 'unrelenting' on abortion "are handing Democrats their dream of the House, Senate, and perhaps even the Presidency.'" (Source)

He is right, but the unrelenting Republicans will remain unrelenting. When Trump says their unrelenting views are "handing Democrats their drem of the House, Senate, and perhaps even the Presidency," he confirms that abortion rights are the defining issue of 2024.

Arizona Update

The Arizona supreme court just ruled that a 160-year-old abortion ban state law is enforceable. Abortion rights groups have already gathered over 500,000 signatures to place the question on the state ballot in Nov. The required number of signatures is 383,923.

This recent court ruling will energize the abortion rights people and voters even more, and thereby draw more people to the polls who are more likely to vote against the Republicans who remain out of step with the majority view.

Other demographic findings

Based on 2021 data from the same report, unmarried women had 87.3% of that year’s reported abortions. This group also had a higher abortion ratio, with 404 abortions per 1,000 live births, compared to 41 per 1,000 live births for married women.[7]

Additionally, in that year, 60.7% of women who reported having an abortion were already mothers, , while 57.3% of people overall indicated that it was their first abortion. *** No matter which view point one has, thats a lot of babies being terminated off the planet, imho.***

“This is an earthquake that has never been seen in Arizona politics,” said Barrett Marson, a Republican consultant in Arizona, of the decision. “This will shake the ground under every Republican candidate, even those in safe legislative or congressional seats.” (Source)
