The Defining Issue of 2024

I wonder if the republicans who are so gung ho on abortion understand that some of the pregnancies that were aborted were because tests were done and it was found that if the child is allowed to be born would need a lifetime of very expensive care. And guess who would be responsible for that? Yep, the government.

I would like to see that in this country we would never have to terminate a healthy pregnancy, but on the other hand we need to do way more testing during early pregnancy so that if there is something wrong, then there is time for an abortion early.

It has absolutely nothing to do with any of the reasons the Repubs groble about. It has to do with POWER!
They want the power to be able to tell you what to do. All this crap about personal freedom is just that, CRAP.

Trump Scrambling to Moderate His Abortion Stance

Trump knows what the people want and he knows abortion rights can kill his election hopes.

CNN: "Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he would not sign a federal abortion ban if one reached his desk were he to be elected in November."

Abortion Ruling is a Full-On Disaster for AZ Republicans

"That movement you feel under your feet? That’s one of America’s key battleground states swinging blue....

"If the GOP-run Legislature does nothing and allows this 19th century law to stand, Republicans soon could be looking at a state where abortion is a constitutional right and Democrats take total control of the state.
" (Source)

Meanwhile, in the AZ state legislature, "... Ben Toma, the Republican speaker, opposed a repeal [of the 1864 abortion ban law] and said he would not allow a vote on it." (Source)

Say hello to blue-state Arizona!

At present the people of AZ have elected a Democratic governor, secretary of state, and attorney genera. In the state house and senate, the Republicans hold a majority of only one seat in each body. The legislature adjourns soon. If Toma remains true to his word, the draconian abortion ban law will not be repealed and the Democrats will have the wind at their back through November.

The Republicans will lose the House. The Republicans will lose the Senate. And Trump will lose the state.

Correction: Republicans in Arizona hold slim majorities in both chambers — a 31-28 advantage in the House and a 16-14 seat advantage in the Senate.

Republicans Driving Women to Support Harris

With their extreme (out of the mainstream) anti-abortion policies and laws, Republicans are motivating millions of women (and like-minded men) to support Harris.

I have a problem with her saying that its a "Trump abortion ban" He may have appointed the judges who ruled that, but he didnt bring the challenge to the supreme court and he didnt have anything to do with the states that passed the laws restricting abortions.

Still the Defining Issue of 2024
"And when it comes to voting on the issue of abortion, a Gallup poll conducted in May found 32 percent of U.S. adults will only vote for candidates who share their views on abortion, with a growing number of pro-choice voters saying they are prioritizing this single issue more than pro-life voters. Whether Trump wants to admit it or not, abortion is absolutely a key issue of the 2024 election cycle." (Source)

Yet Another Red State Moving Toward Enshrining Abortion Rights

This is a serious blow to Trump in Missouri. The people who show up to vote for abortion rights will also be highly likely to vote for Harris, the candidate who supports abortion rights.

The same dynamic exists in six other states.

"Missouri will join at least a half-dozen states voting on abortion rights during the presidential election. Arizona’s secretary of state certified an abortion-rights measure for the ballot on Monday. Measures also will go before voters in Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Nevada and South Dakota."

Abortion Rights Put Florida in Play

"Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign will start a multi-state "Fighting for Reproductive Freedom" bus tour next week in Florida where a proposed constitutional amendment on abortion rights has spilled into the presidential race."
(Source)

Reproductive freedom is driving huge numbers of people into political involvement and the polls who would not otherwise enter. Harris knows this. She also knows that her stand on reproductive rights aligns with the majority of the American people. A Reproductive Freedom bus tour over several days is a brilliant stroke. It puts and keeps the focus on this issue, leaving Trump to squirm as he tries to keep his base happy but waffle out of a hard-line anti-abortion view at the same time.

Harris is clear and strong on this issue. Trump is not.

Trump is Trapped

Two days ago, Trump spoke against a 6-week abortion ban. Yesterday, responding to backlash from the abortion-extremist right, he said he would vote for the ban, which is on the Florida November ballot. Trump personally believes 6 weeks is too short. But he sees no choice but to bow to the right after receiving the backlash he did.

This puts him in direct conflict with the majority of Floridians. "A July poll from the University of North Florida suggested that 69% of likely voters supported the Florida ballot measure, and 23% opposed it."

Seizing the opportunity Trump is gifting Harris on this, she said in a statement, “Donald Trump just made his position on abortion very clear: He will vote to uphold an abortion ban so extreme it applies before many women even know they are pregnant."

"Responding to Trump's comments, the Harris campaign made clear that they would make abortion rights central to their election effort.

"Kevin Munoz, a campaign spokesperson, told reporters that they would continue to frame it around the concept of freedom, a campaign theme: 'Kamala Harris is going to fight for your rights. Donald Trump will take them away.'”

Unlike most other political issues, abortion rights is of vital importance to a massive percentage of America's voters. It is a deeply personal issue that directly affects women, and it's important to many men who care about how abortion laws affect the women they love.

We've seen several times how, even in deeply red states, voters turn out in droves to overturn the far-right, extreme, draconian anti-abortion laws Republican state legislatures have imposed. That response will continue through Nov. 2024, and it will be one of the main reasons Trump will lose the election.

Abortion rights is the defining issue in 2024 because it directly energizes so many voters, and it puts Trump in conflict with a strong, energized majority of Americans.

Trump has a mainstream position on abortion: He’s personally against it but if there is a measure it should be more than 6 Weeks.
Harris has an extreme position: 9 month abortions.
Majority of Americans want limits on abortion especially in the last trimester.
The choice was either 6 weeks or 9 months.
9 months is way more extreme.

Trump has a verified and well known track record of taking abortion rights away from millions of women. He did that by appointing, and boasting about appointing, certain justices to the US Supreme Court, who voted to overturn Rowe v. Wade.

More recently, Trump reinforced his anti-abortion position by saying he will vote against Florida's proposed constitutional amendment that would expand abortion rights.

You can say he has a mainstream position on abortion, but his actions say different. In fact, Trump is personally and directly responsible for stripping reproductive freedom from Americans, and he is now going to vote to keep those freedoms denied.

In this race, Trump is the anti-abortion candidate, and it is Harris who is fighting to keep the government out of our bedrooms. Harris wants women and families to be free to make their own reproductive decisions. Trump wants the government to have that power and he wants individual citizens to be stripped of it.

He appointed judges that ruled that states( and their voters) decide on abortion. The way it should be.
Trump’s personal belief is that he’s against abortion but still felt 6 weeks is too short for state law. That position isn’t extreme. It was his compromise position. Extreme is abortions in the last trimester up to 9 months. His choice was between 6 weeks and no limit on months for abortion. Majority of Americans want limits on abortion.

Not according to the majority of Americans. Not according to the voters in six states, including some red states, who voted to overturn the wrong-headed action by the Trump-appointed judges and others on the Supreme Court. According to those voters, the decision should not be left up to the states. It should be left up to the individual citizens whose abortion decisions are theirs to make.

That's a distinction without a difference. Trump's actions resulted in government-imposed restrictions the majority of Americans do not want.

Your claim about 9 months is a misrepresentation. It seems you have been misled. The exact language of the proposed amendment is:

Article and Section Being Created or Amended: Creates - Article 1, New Section

Full Text of the Proposed Amendment: New Section, Amendment to Limit Government Interference with
Abortion

Limiting government interference with abortion.— Except as provided in Article X, Section 22, no law shall
prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health,
as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider. (
Source)

While inaccurate, your 9-month talking point is making the rounds here in Florida. Will that lie be enough to defeat the proposed amendment? I don't think so. Democrats, independents, and a number of Republicans alike are speaking in favor of this amendment. Most know your 9-month point is a lie.

Looks like someone is lying. The good news is it will be up to the voters to determine whether this proposed amendment language is extreme or mainstream. It is up to them to vote it in or out. It is up to them to sift out the lies being told about this language.

Abortion rights state constitution amendments have passed 100% of the time they have been voted on to date. Lies were told about those amendments too, but the voters saw through them and voted for what they wanted.

Expect the same in Florida and the 9 other states that have this question on their ballots on Election Day, 2024.

Regarding abortion rights, extremist Republicans are tone deaf and vastly out of step with the American people. That's why they keep losing ballot questions like this. When people are given the chance to vote on this question, they vote for abortion rights, not against them. The people want to keep their abortion rights ... the rights that Trump and others stripped away, and continue to try to strip away.

Harris/Walz Reproductive Freedom Tour

This tour started today in Florida. 50 strategic stops (50!) across the country are scheduled between now and Election Day. The tour will feature Harris/Walz and surrogates depending on the stop. They will attract numerous supporters and dominate the headlines in every community they visit. Many of the stops will dominate state news too. Some stops, like today's stop, will make the national news.

They don't have a clean air bus or a labor rights bus, or a bus dedicated to other issues. They do have a Reproductive Freedom bus and tour. Clearly, this campaign believes abortion rights will put them in the White House. Clearly, they believe, as I do, that abortion rights is the defining issue of 2024. They are doing everything they can to energize reproductive freedom voters, who represent the strong majority of Americans, and get them to the polls.

Yes, some of these voters will split their vote between abortion rights and Trump. But many others will be fully won over, once they learn that Trump is lying to them about his moderate position. His actions speak louder than his words.

Crowd photo from West Palm Beach FL today. They drew a crowd with surrogates and dominated the local news. This will go on through Election Day.
