Like him or hate him.. this is ridiculous... has he no clue?

President Obama humiliated the marine who he asked to hold his umbrella by making him ‘look like a butler’, a respected military general claimed today.
Thomas McInerney, a former United States Air Force Lieutenant General, said that the President showed a ‘lack of respect’ by making the soldier shelter him from a shower.
He also said that the President has plenty of aides so did not understand why one of them could not have held the umbrella.

The article states that according to the Marine Corps Manual, not even the President can order a marine to carry an umbrella, buy that's not exactly entirely accurate. The President is not an officer, he's the Commander in Chief. Title 10 of the U.S. Code states that members of the Marine Corps shall “perform such other duties as the President may direct.”

I'm sure all the hard core conservatives (the ones who knee-jerk first and think with faulty selective memory later) are just livid over this.

Hey, here's a fun question... Has a US Marine ever held an umbrella for President George W. Bush, President Bill Clinton, or President Ronald Regan?

It says "no officer or official".. if that's right, seems like it would cover it.

Still.. It doesn't matter if it was Obama or Ronald Reagan....even if they have the " right ".. it's very tacky.

Tacky? That's putting it mildly. It's so silly looking that it looks like a SNL skit. At least the Marine holding the umbrella for Regan as he exited Marine One at Camp David didn't look comical.

So if the president had asked the Marine to give him oral sex, the Marine would be obliged? Do the dishes? Wipe his mug after dribbling some spaghetti sauce down his chin? How about brush his dog? Change his kid's diaper?

As far as instances of other presidents getting their umbrellas held by Marines, post it, or it didn't happen.

The Marines are not his butlers. I'm sure he was told that when he first took office, and he just chose to be mafia-cool.

I see a Marine with TREMENDOUS self control.

When a president abuses their power in this manner it just goes a long way to show how they really feel about those who they rule over. It shows that they no longer feel that they work for the People.

Talk about pushing Title 10 past it's intent.

Holding an umbrella over the head of something as useless as a president is a waste of fine men.

Those don't look like US servicemen. They are not saluting US style. Brits maybe? Not sure. Don't recognize the uniform either.

The Marine might have been willing..might have been no big deal to him.
I just see a SPECTACULAR waste of training and resources. But, I guess that's the governmnt way...spend many years of training and thousands of dollars to get a highly trained Marine. Then, his high risk assignment? Doing something an intern would be thrilled to do.

G'pa....you were a Marine? Did you save lives? Were you a hero?

I held a umbrella once....

It may have not been a big deal to him. It also would make NO difference whether it was or not, or whether he was willing, or not. It is a blatant abuse of power and a waste of fine men.

Our presidents should be guarding by retired clowns, any one else that would cost more is a waste of money. Clowns should be guarded by their own kind.
