Pets and Customers

Some of the responses on here are just, well baffling. Some of you claim to be Business people, professionals, and a number of other names.
so the fault is theirs.
Those are our terms if the customer wants they're expedited freight hauled by profesional drivers trained and qualified in handling their special needs high value freight.
I had a customer who wanted me to put my dog in a cage outside their fence, and I said no, and they relented and let her in. Another one also said no, but eventually relented and let her in.
Simply explain to the moron at the gate that you WILL NOT tie your dog to the fence and leave it, nor will you put the dog in a crate/cage and leave it outside. Tell him/her that is cruelty to animals which is against the law. Tell him/her that your dog is a family member and that you are sure that they would not treat their member in such a way.

If all else fails thank them and drive away. No customer is worth that nor is a carrier that allows pets in the truck, yet expects the driver to tie it to a fence and leave it! Just my feelings.

If you don't say so, I hope your forklift can get to the gate.
I like dogs as much as the next person, but just because you think you and your dog are special, don't expect anyone else to share your feelings.

The poster that started this thread is wondering if business is slowing down in another thread. I kinda wonder if there is a connection?? Or, if it is just a combination of foolish actions on their part that causes dispatch to overlook their truck??

What is that law...something about actions getting opposite reactions???

I've been out here 6 years and had "Miss Buscuit" with me the entire time. There have been perhaps 5 loads where she became an issue. All of them easily resolved. I will leave her tied at the guard shack or put her in a crate or what ever is needed to get the job done. She is an old lady but 10 to 15 min tied to the fence ain't gonna kill her. We can all survive anything for a short time.

I will say the usual response is "Oh! What a cute dog!!!!" (A Whopper Jawed Pekenise) A little give and take among reasonable people and any problem can find a solution.

I would not be out here with out her. she is great company..(and a chick magnet...LOL)

I can understand a companies position if an animal has access to the load. I wouldn't want my property chewed, peed or pooped on either. If they don't have access to the load then what is the problem? Have they banned birds from flying over the property? Birds have particularly good aim for freshly washed cars remember...... How about insects? How about squirrels? The list can go on and on.
Why is it that at a kill plant dogs aren't allowed on the property but the company processes filthy animals. Figure that one out. Saw a few that died in transit and dumped on the ramps waiting to be disposed of - but you can't bring fido on the premises.....
On a side note, on hot days, chickens are given a shower in the trailer while they are waiting their turn. (How nice and thoughtful)
And, if you are around some of these plants at shift change I'm sure you'll see a few workers that blur the difference between human and animal.

Nice sarcasm BTW...

Because they can...it is their property, their rules.

WE serve the customers, they don't serve us...

If I invite you to my party...and bring your pet..I'll kick your butt out....the pet was not invited.

Answer this then, at your party if the beer truck shows up with your order of Molson Golden 1/2 kegs that are just above freezing on a hot summer day and the driver has a dog, are you sending him away before or after delivery?

You don't have all day now..........what's it going to be?????????

Sort of like the paper or plastic commercial....

IF I were a stickler on the rules...I'd go out and have the beer put in my pick up....

Bad example though...Beer is a food group governed by the FDA..there would be no dog

amazingly so is dog/cat food and all the packaging...NO pets allowed. Ironic eh?;)

You would pay money for Molson and have it delivered? You like Molson that much? Thought you had better taste than that!! :p

Labatt's is better than Molson or Bud. When I drink beer I prefer beers by Great Lakes Brewing, they don't make "cookie cutter" beers. I like the "Edmonds Fitzgerald" brew. I would rather have Jim Beam Black. I would allow a truck with a dog that was delivering that!! :p

I put a link to Great Lakes Brewing, just for fun.

Depends on where you find the "rat" dog. I have seen working Jack Russels in Scotland and Yorkshire Terriers in North Yorkshire. I can assure you that they are nothing like the silly yippers like you see in this country. The "jacks" are used to pull live foxes out of their holes. The "yorkies" are used to assist game keepers keep vermin (rabbits, hares etc) numbers down. Take my word for it, the are tough dogs when not ruined by their owners.

But now I'm in a CV, no co-driver, and I know the day is coming when I'm at loggerheads with the customer and no solution in sight. I'm one of those guys that treats the dog like a furry daughter that doesn't speak clearly, so there's absolutely, positively no way I'm tying her up to the fence or putting her in a cage outside the gate while I drive away. I know the day's coming when there's not going to be an easy solution; I just don't know what to do when that day comes.

Maybe tell them their forklift will have to come to the front gate for their freight?

Keep in mind that shippers and consignees do not exist to solve your problems. You exist to solve theirs.

If the day comes when you are at loggerheads with them over a dog, it will go a lot easier on you if you understand ahead of time that you are the loser before such a stand-off even begins.

Not long ago, we were at a pickup where the security officers (two of them) asked with unusual interest if we had a dog in the truck. We said no. They later told me their interest was inspired by an incident the day before. An expediter truck from another carrier arrived with a dog and the team was uncooperative and unwilling to leave the dog at the gate. They were banned from the property. A complaint was called into the carrier and the carrier fired them. End of story, except the dog was oblivious to it all.

I know you and most other pet owners dearly love their dogs. Diane and I once had a dog similarly loved. He died before we took up life on the road. While it was a heartbreaking event, it was good in that he was too old to put in a truck and we would not have left him behind to go on the road.

Be careful about letting your love for your dog overshadow your duty to your customers and carrier. You may love your dog but your carrier does not, your shipper does not, your consignee does not, and security guards at plant gates do not. I suggest you take a moment to think through what your dog means not to you, but to each of the people you interact with to successfully complete a shipment.
