Then how do you account for those miles?? I consider all the miles from the time I drop a load till the next load is in my truck deadhead miles.
You were apparently educated when they were still teaching the "old math" .... ;)

Obviously, the "new math" is much better for one's bottomline ....

I guess I just do things the old fashion way. I should try the new math and my profit per load would increase if I didnt count all those miles in between loads...........

I've said many times..I haven't a clue my bottomline is..;)

Bills are paid, money in the bank, momma's happy...everyones happy....I am not anal about accounting for every mile...
I don't need too....

Hey - maybe if you did that enough, it would be somehow possible to actually have negative deadhead ?

How would that work ? ..... maybe ya count it against your loaded miles driven, reducing them ..... and jacking up the per mile rate ?

Yeah, yeah ..... that's the ticket ....

I like this new math. I just deadheaded home from Baraboo, WI. I have a dentist appointment Monday morning. Um, 225 negative deadhead miles... wow this load paid almost $3.00/mile!

I'm thinking about after the dentist thing I may just go OOS until Friday. Does this new math work towards my in-service time positively in a negative way? Or does it count on the positive side in a negative way?

I dont know about being Anal about it. I just kind of like to know if Im running in the black or the red on the loads I take, Knowing total income and costs, lets me know where Im at.
Lets me know if I should have said no thanks on some loads.

I'm not really sure  ..... but I think I see where you are going with all of this: obtaining paid vacations ..... simply by driving while OOS .... truly a masterstroke !

And these carriers thought they were puttin' it to us ..... by gum, a little good old Amerikan ingenuity ..... we'll show 'em a thing or two ....

Paid vacations. Yeah I like that concept! I haven't had a paid vacation in almost 14 years. If I deadhead to Florida tomorrow I could stay OOS until after the first of the year and consider it a paid vacation. How warm is that! Jeff, I'm on my way!

What OVM said, and there is no reason to duck, everyone including me knows i am a big mouth!! I wear it as a badge of honor....:D

I have said ever since i got into this business that most of you would never run your business as i do..i don't do things like most of you and wouldn't ever expect you to do as i do.. but the difference is, I don't worry about my buttom line and never have...lol i have lost money on paper on every busines i have been in except the personal chef business and this one is no different. So i will continue to be the "vacation expediter" drive as i feel like and be it old math or new math, as OVM said:

You might wish to consider posting the highlighted portion above as part of your signature where it will show on every post you have made .... so that the innocent and unsuspecting who read here are adequately forewarned .....

Well, it's certainly true:

There is nothing like the pride of personal achievement ...

Take your odometer reading from today, subtract the odometer reading from January 1 to get your total miles driven. Then, from that figure subtract your loaded miles for the year. What you have left over is deadhead miles. Divide your deadhead by your total miles and that's your DH percentage. Some of you will no doubt be shocked, shocked I tell you, at your DH percentage.

Yes .... but the real question is: what door does it unlock .... ?

Sorry ... but I really wasn't pointing out any spelling mistakes - it's you that's putting that there ....

The only reason for the highlight was to emphasize one thing, and one thing only:

You don't worry about your bottomline ...

'Nuff said ....

To say that "You don't worry about your bottomline ..." and then chase freight is at the very least disingenuous and misleading. Add to that the highly massaged deadhead and grossly misleading "per mile" pay comments, and it's all a massive disservice to newbies reading here and trying to get a handle on the business. Clearly, the motivation of these types of posts are self-serving in that the self-aggrandizement (and cheesecake distributions) are meant to curry favor in the eyes of a carrier and to boost an ego in the eyes of other expediters.

That kinda puts things into a different perspective. I'm thinking about driving back to Baraboo for the weekend. But that would be more bad deadhead miles. I'm so confused. I should probably delay my vacation until the end of January and keep it to about 10 days total as planned.

I have a really cool rechargeable L.E.D. flashlight I keep in my van. The light it produces is a bit harsh, but not near as harsh as the light of reality you have shone upon this deadhead mileage business. Turtle, you're like a major buzz kill!
