My family is very conservative. We managed to parent 2 girls to adulthood. Neither had sex prior to marriage. Both completed difficult college degrees in 3.5 years. One already has her Master's and the other will have hers next May. Conservative values and good parenting are not mutually exclusive. The opposite is likely more true.

Yes, Leo, your daughters are very well done - but I think mine are, too.[ Daughter #1 is a wife, mother, and nurse, and #2 is working 2 jobs to pay for college and a car.]
I don't believe political ideology creates good parents - the desire to be good parents does that, and knows no politics.
PS I don't see sex before marriage as wrong, per se - it's sex among immature and unprepared people that needs to be prevented, and abstinence only programs have failed miserably to accomplish it.
If we demand that our young folks abstain from sex until marriage, there would be a whole lot of unfortunate marriages taking place, is what I think, and how would that be better?

First off, It is NOT shouting,
Sorry, but shouting it is, on the internet.
it is emphisising a point, I know no other way.
You're not too old to learn, are you? I learn new things, you can too. [My 7 yr old granddaughter just showed me how to make hearts and silly faces with symbols, lol]

Second, His foriegn policy is killing more and more people and he has NOT done what is needed. Terrorist attacks are way up since he took office. MOre and more countries are under attack. The civilian death rates in Iraq and Afghanistan are WAY up since he took office.
No comment. Don't know why that is happening, and don't believe you do, either, in spite of your 'knowledge'.

Washington etc believed in everything that Obama does NOT belive. LIke the ownership of private property, private unlimited gun ownership, LIMITED government etc etc
This insistence of yours regarding what Obama "believes" is getting tiresome - unless you can read his mind, you have no proof of such statements as "does not believe in ownership of private property". And no one in their right mind would support private unlimited gun ownership: some folks [convicted of violent crimes, clinically psychopathic, etc] should not own weapons, period.

Abstanace does NOT increase teen out of wed lock pregnacy, LACK of morals does. That is the problem. We ACCEPT immoral behaivor and reap the results.
Lack of "morals" does not cause teen pregnancy. Lack of sufficient preparation for the raging hormones of adolescence combined with our biological imperative to procreate does it. Preaching abstinence until marriage is a bad policy, guaranteed to produce pregnant teens who are terrified to confess their 'failure' to their parents, and/or some very ill advised and unhappy marriages, too.
Immoral is pretending that "just say no" is all the ammunition teens need to make the right decisions about such incredibly important subjects.

I am NOT going to argue with you, I have MY beliefs and you have yours. When most of the people had mine, we had far FEWER teen preggros and far LESS crime than we do today.

We had 3 in my entire school days, now the same high school, with fewer students then when I was there, has 30 a YEAR!! Just a fact.

As to my beliefs on why terrorist activity is up. Some is based on my prior work, some on what my son, who is in Afghanistan, tells me. Some is from my nephew who is now in training for Afghanistan. What they tell me pretty much matches everything that I learned in my 20 years in that work.

I don't claim to read Obama's mind, I just listen to him and his friends. I see how he has voted in the past and now I see his agenda.

It is my belief that the biggest difference between the so-called liberal agenda and so-called conservative agenda is that liberals "accept" anything except personal responsibility and conservatives accept the responsibility for their own actions and expect everyone else to do the same.

I am glad to see you posting in here again, I enjoy learning from others. I do my best NOT to get personal with anyone in here. Everyone is allowed an opionion, including me and you.

There should never be personal ridicule. That is un-called for and not needed. AS to me being too old to learn, might be. I passed 18 40 years ago or more. Things just naturally slow down. I don't really think that I need to learn how to make smilely faces though, I can click on the little icon next to this page!! :p

I doubt it - there were 'homes for unwed mothers" to send the girls to, in total secrecy, of course. That you didn't know about it doesn't mean it didn't happen. Crime? That's a whole nother subject.

Same reply as above.

It's my belief that accepting responsibility for one's own actions and expecting the same of others is just like good parenting: it is not related to political beliefs, but to personal ones. To say that "liberals accept anything except personal responsibility" is a ludicrous generalization, and not even worthy of a rebuttal.

You're only as old as you feel, right? And Joe: you're not a LOT older than me, either.

Yes, but Meg showed me how to do it without the icons! :p
And now I have to roll - it's been interesting, though!:)

I has been fun!! And Meg did NOT show me so I will have to continue to do what only I know how to do BEST!! :D

By the way, I was NOT arguing. I do this to get an insight into other's thoughts. It is very inlighting!! I LEARN from it.

See, even some one as OLD as I can still from others.

I'm a little late getting back to the party, and it looks like it's been fun. I only have a few random pennies to throw into the pond:
  • Abstinence until marriage is a noble goal, but it's unrealistic in most cases. It only takes one moment of mutual weakness to blow up a couple of otherwise pristine teenage lives, and at that age they don't understand consequences.
  • To fault Sarah Palin and her conservative values for her daughter's pregnancy is a bit strident to say the least. The fact is, we don't know what values were taught to her kids within the privacy of their home. The only thing we know for sure is that her family doesn't believe in abortion.
  • One thing I haven't seen mentioned in any of the arguments is the outside influences which factor into the lives of today's teenagers. The liberal indoctrination going on in the public schools, the sexuality displayed in every aspect of today's youth oriented entertainment, eg. the Spears sisters - it all influences the teenage mindset.
  • There comes a point when these young people are old enough to take responsibility for their actions. In Bristol Palin's case, the hazards of premarital sex were likely preached to her ad nauseum and she chose to ignore the warnings. It's HER fault she got pregnant - not her mother's. When we send our kids out in cars we're at the point where we've done about all we can do. Now not only she, but the rest of her family suffers the consequences of her turning a deaf ear to her family's values.

I should also add a very strong religious/moral foundation, something lacking in far too many homes anymore since the few have dictated to the many.

This argument and layouts are noble to be sure. however when looking at teen pregnancy numbers across the states the traditional bible belt states have the highest rates of teen/unplanned births, while the "heathen" lib states have the lowest. So the bible belts main idea for sex education, that being a big 2 page book with "N' on one page and "O" on the other appears to be not working so well.

Maybe it did work for your family or maybe you just got lucky who knows, and for every family it does work there appears to be allot that it's not.The whole teen sex problem is a fairly new situation (post depression) not because of lacking morals but because of other changes in our society, prior to the last turn of the century (and at lest up to the great war part one) most were wed in there middle to late teens so premarital sex was not a problem because of function and not morals. The fact that those areas where moral still mean something are struggling with this problem more kinda means that it's not a morel issue but one of education, we don't teach cause and effect any more this is why D.A.R.E. is an abysmal failure we tell the kids how horrible drugs are and if they try them they go "wow!" this feels good so this sets up a whole house of cards that starts falling because we lied to them about one thing they stat to test everything else, instead of being honest about drugs and telling kids yea they make you feel great but at the cost of totally fraking up your life (I don't know if this is the total answer here but it certainly can't fail any worse then what we are doing now,yes I'm sure somebody will pipe up and say it could be worse but your just lying to yourself.)

Politically speaking the fact that Sarah Louise Palin has a daughter with these issues means only one thing really, that she is more real than the over produced, over marketed package of a candidate than we usually get and that is about it

Ok, if I have too. Geez, like this is such an improtant issue to some people. If only people spent as much time learning history as they spend figuring out how to stress a word on an internet chat then maybe we would not be in the mess we are in today.

Maybe if people spent more time learning self control, things would be better. Maybe if people spent their time learning self-reliance and less time feeling "entitled" to everything.

But, they don't, so, I will try my best NOT to shout internet style and the world will be better off for it. I most likely will try to figure out how to turn on the spell check too, don't wish to offend anyone with my lack of spelling skills.

This is the most sensible statement in this entire post.

The fact that most politicians are distant to reality in both family and substance matters to most. Her appeal to the average person, both conservative and libertarian is the fact she is real.

It seems that the religious right is one of the real problems with the republican party and further more if there was a person who could bring the party together with the many many independents, it could be palin. I would rather see her get Steele's job and fight than to try to run for any office.

As for Obama, I have come to the conclusion that when issues like gun control, property rights and so on pop up, the supports of Obama don't read what he has written or listen to what he has said.

Well stated; here's a few statistics and a good article about teen pregnancy in the US. One quote from the article IMHO brings up a fact of recent cultural evolution that has a big impact on the mindset of today's teens:

Glowing media portrayals of celebrity pregnancies don’t help, either, she said. “They make it out to be very glamorous,” said Birch, who cited a calculation by Alaska officials that teen births were up 6 percent in that state in 2006.
Mississippi now has highest teen birth rate - Kids and parenting- msnbc.com

All things considered, it's fair to say that the better the education system of a state and the whiter it's population, the fewer teen pregnancies there will be.

I would like to see those stats from 1950-1965 or so. Education has a lot do with it for sure. Color I don't think is the real basic issue as much has the lack of intact families in those neighborhoods. That was brought about by our glorious welfare system. Paying more for each new child. Paying more if the father was NOT in the picture or the offending couple was not married.

We need to stress abstenece, teach responsibility, teach birth control, but, the parents must aware and consent for their children to be issued, prescribed those tools. As long as children are minors the State has no right to interfere with the wishes of the parents. At least not in a free country they don't. Who knows what these leftist wackos want?

At the risk of being entirely politically incorrect, broaching a very delicate and highly personal subject, and placing you in a rather awkward position, I have to ask (in complete sincerity) the rather obvious question:

How do you know that ?

Being in the taxi business for 6 years taught me one thing well maybe 3 things...

Welfare people generate MORE welfare people...they teach their children how to scam the system and they in turn teach their children..it is a downward spiral...
There is a whole network of people out there that make a living on this very thing...
I should write a book on how to get a welfare check....from what workers are a soft touch..to doctors that write easy notes for a 100 bucks the whole whack....
There are whole generations of welfare artists who ply their trade..

Back to topic...

I read Speakers going rate is around $200,000 a pop ....
Question is....Does Palin care for America enough to run for President? OR
Is she just scamming her groupie fans and making a killing? Time will tell.
