The question becomes how do we as a nation do a better job of identifying a person intent on committing mass killings. I don't know the answer, but am pretty sure it rests upon a serious amount of profiling and discrimination.
So many of these mass killings have commonalities. The shooters are typically young males, loners without a wife/girlfriend or children. Disconnected from their own parents and siblings. Social misfits who deal with some level of rejection in their personal lives. Frustrated. Isolated. Seething with rage for some perceived injustice.
A long debate and review of current gun permitting practices will follow. Some might suggest we need to tighten access to guns for males under the age of 30, for example. Let gun ownership become a graduated process for young males. Exceptions could be made for those who have honorable military service.
Our nation is currently producing too many young males who are self-absorbed, self-centered time bombs waiting to explode when disappointment reaches their doorstep. These mass shootings are a modern phenomena. Perhaps parents have become too indulgent with socially maladjusted children. Either we find an effective method for identifying these future killers or exceedingly draconian gun laws are on the way.
When 'maybe' is all you know, it'd definitely be wiser to wait for some facts before assigning blame and motive.
Another sad day for a lot of Americans, and I can't help but wonder if the tremendous publicity given such incidents only makes it worse.
Yes it dose...
Its called social engineering will and worse yet it desensitizes the masses to the horror and also gives support to those who desire to stri our rights.
Sounds like you are describing a large part of the Occupy Wallstreeters
Social engineering? You need to broaden your horizons: those right wingers are misinforming you [and you're letting them.] No one is trying to change our attitudes to be more tolerant of such killing, ok?
It's corporate irresponsibility, using sensationalism to 'sell' their papers & broadcasts. Nearly all the major news outlets belong to just a few large corporations, which makes the news pretty uniform these days - only the op-ed viewpoints differ.
Desensitizing? Nowhere near it, if the horrified reactions of most people are genuine, and I believe they are. What does desentitize people to violence is exposure in a form that makes it appealing, such as movies and videogames. Which have been getting ever more violent for years now, and guess who their 'target' audience would be? That's right: young males.
It's rather interesting to me that Switzerland has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the world [all males are issued one for required civil service] and yet gun violence is rare - their politicians don't even bother with protection!!!
Of course, the Swiss have a different culture, where defense is taught and viewed as a 'collective responsibility', which is an attitude so many Americans see as 'socialist'. The writers of the Constitution saw it as the best defense against tyranny, and I agree with them.
Social engineering? You need to broaden your horizons: those right wingers are misinforming you [and you're letting them.]
you mean this dudeYou should broaden your horizons as well, you are being misinformed by the left and you are letting them. It is not the "right wingers" claiming this was a government conspiracy, it is people like Alex Jones.
