Five NASCAR Drivers Decline President Obama's White House Invitation

Five NASCAR Drivers Decline President Obama's White House Invitation - From Our Editors - SBNation.com

President Barack Obama will honor NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and the 11 other Chase drivers from last year in a White House ceremony on Wednesday – but nearly half of the 2010 playoff contenders won't be there.

NASCAR said Thursday that five drivers – Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart – will not be attending the White House visit due to "schedule conflicts."

They must be very busy people. Regardless of one's political views, the president is still the president – and an opportunity to speak with the leader of the free world is a rare and special one.

You'd think whatever photo shoots or sponsor appearances these drivers have lined up on Wednesday afternoon – if that's indeed the reason – could be rescheduled. After all, this is the President of the United States we're talking about here.

For a sport that prides itself on patriotism, having so many drivers turn down the president's invitation simply seems strange.

Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth will attend.

Well got to tell you maybe this would sound odd but I know a lot of people who are libertarian and don't like Obama who would rather meet him than any nascar driver.

I have no desire to meet Obama or any NASCAR driver. Obama is nothing but trouble and NASCAR is useless, except for the "Nap factor". NASCAR puts me to sleep faster than pro football does.

I think MORE people should start turning down invitations to meet King Putz the 1ST. Leader of the free world? Bull feathers, he does not believe in freedom. On top of that, a leader he is not.

Burton said all the debate about NASCAR's visit to the White House symbolizes a larger divide within the country.

"Ten years ago, after 9-11, this country was unified. This country was together," he said. "Today, we're sitting here talking as if someone, for political reasons, is going or not going to the White House.

And we wonder why this country is in trouble. We can point the finger and blame all the people in Washington. Well, maybe we need to look in the **** mirror a little bit. Really. It's our country."

As I said, I know people who would meet the president while not wanting to meet nascar drivers and wonder after reading the article Turtle posted the link to, how many would actually turn down an invite to meet Obama?

I think they would say they would but honestly, I think they would be excited to be asked and their answer would be "Hell Yes!"

Regardless of your political beliefs, it would be a great honor to meet the president. IMHO

I don't like what he does but I would still meet him. If nothing else I could express my concerns. Of course these guys are marketing themselves so they could be afraid of the impact on their image.

LOL, absolutely they said it was a scheduling thing and not personal (to paraphase)..what else would you expect them to say, they are part of a very public organization....the fact that Jeff Burton felt he had to even speak to the "political divde" shows where the thinking is....as for meeting barry if the the invite would be extented, not a chance at all...and i'll leave it at that...:D

Not even to throw a shoe at him?

One of the problems with me meeting him is that chances are id probably be "escorted away if not arrested.....and it wouldn't be for throwing a "shoe"...:D

You have to have respect for someone to want to meet them, and i have no respect for him at all.....lol he rates right there with my ex MIL....

I had little or no respect for Junior when I was invited to meet him. But I have respect for the Presidency. I went. It was an honor. It was an honor to be invited, it was an honor to be in the White House, it was an honor to shake hands with the President.

Politics aside..I would honour the position more then the person...
after all you'd be meeting the "President of the United States of America"

Like I'd like to meet...the Queen of England, Prime Minister of Canada, no matter what party they represent...

What about a leader that is viewed in a very negatively? Like Ahmadinejad. I would probably meet him if invited just to listen to him speak, the news clips make him look crazy but this guy has to be intelligent to be in the position he is in, though I could be wrong. I am curious to hear the mindset of those in power but would like to talk with them one on one just to really get an understanding.

Maybe my standards are higher, (or lower) but I don't show respect for people who show no respect for me, my beliefs or for our Constitution. That goes for Barry or a Mafia Don. I see NO difference between the two. IF I ran into Barry on the street I would be polite. I would not want to turn my back on him, but I would be polite. I can see NO reason that I would EVER accept an invitation to the White House from him and would SAY PUBLICLY that I refuse the invitation because I have no trust or belief in him or anything that he stands for.

You either stand up for you beliefs or you don't. There is no middle ground. You ether have the courage of you convictions, or you do not. Groveling before King Putz the 1ST just because he holds an office does NOT stand up to MY convictions.

Do I care what Barry or anyone else thinks about this? NOPE. Does Barry or anyone one else care? NOPE. The ONLY thing that matters is that I remain faithful to MY beliefs.

Personally none of the above would I consider an honor if extend from barry. As long as he is in the WH or the Presidency, I view neither f them in high regard..he has lowered both of them in regard to importance and position in his time there...

Sorry, i wouldn't walk across the street to meet him it i were asked to ....as i i said, chances are id be arrested...and as Layout posted, I'd make it public my refusal to except any type of of invite to meet him anywhere....

The man is beneath the office and has tarnished it.....

Well you could have gone to the UAW/AFL-CIO love fest in downtown Detroit and stood in line and shook his hand. He was here, again and many times you could have gone.

We know you would love to meet him.
