insanity finding a good driver

OK I am ready to say F the idea of hiring drivers to run a small fleet. My god I have never in my life seen people so out of touch with reality ! Had 1 guy whom seemed like a good driver dl checked out great.and I said ok I will be nice and drive to Ohio to get you so you dont have to take the bus 500 miles.

WTF what a mistake that was. I get 110 miles down the road from my house Peoria, il and I am almost at Danville il when this guys wife calls WTF wife calling insane ok. she says he doesnt have the money to pay for fule to start ok not a problem I could have helped him with money to get started if he would have said something to me ahead of time.

But the wife calling and he is out running chores for her and cant talk to me WTF see ya later. I went into the emergency turn around in median and did a flip and came home to peoria LOL.

Now I am thinking forget these guys I am just gonna sell my van and put the money down on a large box truck or semi truck. more freight for those and the freight pays more. and no headaches from some drivers needing me to hold their hands.

SO my ? is am I the only O/O that feels this way ? I am seeing many ads on the board offering the world and these guys either blow it off and or want more.

Or as in my case had many good people call about work but were just didnt have expediting experience.

The course of business success [like true love] is often full of bumps in the road, ya know? There are good drivers out there, and good owners, and they don't always find each other right away....

yea i would just give up!because it is hard for a driver to make it in a van.you must own the van to make a paycheck.i tried it at first and did the 65 -35 split with me paying fuel and getting fsc.that there about broke me!!then i found a owner who paid fuel and gave me .35 a mile loaded.that would have been ok but panther was real slow then.so i would say drive it yourself buddy.you should do ok that way.and you want have to worry about drivers.most of the drivers are ok,its just you cant make it out here with out owning the van.so you cant blame the driver he is just not making any money

Well the freight I get is .85 cpm so 65% is .55cpm to the driver and the van is a diesel gets almost 20mpg and better if they drive slow. so its a easy money maker. the driver can easily take home about $450 or more per week after fuel. if the driver drives 1500 miles in 1 week thats $825 and then take $200 off for fuel thats $625 a week in his pocket. That is not to bad of a pay for a driver.

My van is leased on 2 companies so the van doesn't sit often.

I took the week of to work on a house I am listing for sale here in peoria and putting up a 6 foot fence in my back yard at the house I live in now. and then hopefully I will pull out in the van friday the 1st.

You're assuming too much.

20 is a good target but you should think along the lines of 16. You are talking about plain old vans, right?

Fuel is one expense, does the driver pay tolls? How about other things for the van?

At 85 cents a mile, that's cheap if that's all you can get. I would think a buck a mile is needed for a 60/40 split, and that should be consistent.

See vans are a b*tch to keep people in, I know. With the way freight may be next year, it is a hit or miss right now.

There are a lot of people out there but maybe try 40% to the driver and you deal with the rest.

By the way if the driver isn't making say 40 cents a mile, it is not worth it.

20 is very do-able... I get 21 plus with mine if I keep it about 62mph (7.3 powerstroke).. but still, it's hard to consistantly make enough money to support a driver AND owner with a van.. I couldn't do it without getting all the money... at least not right now..

The issue isn't so much making a little extra for yourself from the van, it's making enough to be worthwhile to the driver. Vans make a decent amount of money for one but when it's split between two it's thin or thinner.

Running a two household team in a van you won't make it. Most drivers are not going to stay out on the road for $450.00 a week.

Well from what I am hearing from drivers many OO don't even pay them or care if they make money ! also I am hearing they feel lucky if they get enough miles to even make $500 total in a week. now I know there is always 2 parts to that story but I am sure there are OO who truly dont care they have some old van that is paid for and anything the truck makes is profit.

but we will just have to see what happens.

Oh come on guys, get with it and own a bunch of vans to see what you get in mileage.

It may get 20 if it is driven sanely but how many 'drivers' actually have the fortitude to keep the speed down and to worry about mileage in the van?

Not MANY.

See as a driver, even if they pay for fuel, they want to get that load done which means they may not be disciplined enough to be consistent. AND if you expect them to treat the thing as their own, think again.

16 is a good number for planning, not 20.

Being a nice guy and picking the driver up or fronting him fuel money to get started will most likely come back to bite you in the a**.
I owned construction business' for 27 years and I can tell you that once some of these guys see you doing something nice they will continue to hit you up for more and more favors. And when they are ready to quit they will just abandon the van and leave owing you money.
Run it like a business that you don't own and have to turn a profit or you will lose your job. Nothing personal.

22K for the year is the national poverty level wage. Take a couple of weeks off at that $450 per week and you are essentially at that number short of $500 dollars. Put that with minimum qualifications to drive a van and you have a unsustainable situation.

That's not a good trade. The upside gain of "a little extra cash" nowhere near compensates you for the downside risks of putting a driver in a van and a van on the road.

You are more qualified than I when it comes to hiring drivers. I did want to say I think that poverty level is for a family of four. Also 450.00 per week is equal to making around 12 bucks an hour at a forty hour job after taxes maybe even a little more. For a younger, single, non college educated person or an older retired person that is not all that bad when compared to jobs today's economy. $450.00 sounds like poverty but for many in the work force it is competitive. There are huge numbers of people out there not taking home $450.00 a week.
