Anyone who thinks women are [always] frugal has never shopped at Victoria's Secret, or Bath & Body Works, or anyplace in the mall. ;)

Yes I have. Not a good idea, to offer to a girlfreind/wife to take her shopping in one of those places.I'm still paying for that move. But women do need that extra-special attention, as well.

Skyraider I have to wonder if Victoria Secret has ever considered this?

I laughed when I read you post then I got to thinking about it and I think Victorias Secret would make more money off of coffee then they do their clothing line...

Try this. Store brand oatmeal, 2 packets per breakfast.
Loaf of store brand bread and store brand peanut butter for lunches. On the suop isle. Buy Hormel Compleats, Dingy Moore beef stew, those steamed rice dinners for dinners. All are microable but dont need refrigerator. coffee with Bfast, tea with lunch, water for dinner. your bill should be 36 dollars for 5 days worth of meals.
Any cheaper and youll be dumpster diving.

Geez, I was seriously thinking of getting into this biz. I don't need to make BIG money, but after reading this thread I didn't know you made so little you had to scrimp to afford a hot dog!
Yikes! Ya'll really make that little money?

There are some things to keep in mind, while also knowing that I've yet to haul my first expedited load...still I've been making a total nuisance of myself for a week now, asking questions and reading.
AFAIK there is no such thing as a 'company' driver in this business. Everyone is either a fleet owner or independent contractor driving for a fleet owner. Either way you are self-employed. The business is cyclical in both the short and long term. There are weeks you are dripping money and there are weeks you can't buy a load and there are weeks in between the two extremes. So you have to be disciplined and budget yourself and put money back for the bad weeks.
It all averages out in the end, but some people don't do these basic things, or they do other things (like screw up their taxes). Also you have to know the period Jan-March is a slow quarter even in the best economies. This isn't the best. I would say if you were successful in yachting for a period of time you can do this too. Basic business savvy applies universally.

I would agree with you but that's not always the case.

There are a number of factors involved;

1 - the company you are contracted with. Some are parents telling the children what to do. Others are really good at "ok here is the load, you want it?" While others seem to fall in between. Point is the company controls what you can or can't make first.

2 - while we are independent contractors, we are not. Some seem to think we can't be told what to do or don't do. I won't go into it any farther.

3 - most of the success and failure on a personal level has to do with attitude. Most of this work can sux to be plain but it matters how a person views life and what goals they have set in order to get positive stuff out of it.

4 - business cycles aside, there is always work but that depends on what you drive.

Tropigal, the advice drivers are giving should be helpful, and it's coming from experienced expediters. Remember that all good business people try to minimize costs to maximize profits. Food bills are one such area. Eating at truckstops and other restaurants will thin your wallet while fattening your waistline. Fixing your own is cheaper and healthier. There should be a lot of information in past posts on types of meals and how to fix them yourself. The members of EO arent crazy...if they weren't making at least a decent living while touring the country, they wouldn't be doing it. Now, I won't scare you with how many meals you can get out of a 50# bag of dog food. :)

I believe this sort of falls into the 80/20 rule category. It was started by someone looking to help those at the far end of the spectrum money wise. The majority in this business are not in such dire straights I don't think, at least not often and not for long.
