That map is wrong, sorry but my phone with AT&T would not operate with that distance from the nearest tower (Northwestern Hwy and 7 mile) with the trees I have around me and elevation I am at. There are two towers near by in Detroit with a mile that is not on the map beside the one a half mile away that AT&T own. And both the Telegraph and Southfield freeway corridors have nothing on your map either but there are plenty of towers in those areas when you drive through there.

Why did I get another AT&T phone?

Well because I am locked into a contract that I can't get out of until April thanks to my father. Long story which it really isn't important, because I actually pay a lot less than most others do for their services, the dropped calls are the thing that bother me the most. I didn't pay anything really for the phone, something like $5 but it is going back when I get a chance.

Seems like a bit of stretch dontcha think ? .... considering that you really don't know me ..... or what my driving habits and skillz actually are ....... or whether the majority of my usage even occurs while I'm moving ......

Uh, you DID say that you talked 10 to 12 hours recently, giving the specific locations.....didn't you?

Of course, I do realize that world is full of people that are prone to making such judgements wholesale and characterizing individuals - or even entire classes of people ........ based on little to no actual observation of the specific individual being characterized .......

I don't need to see each and every individual out there to know that the MAJORITY cannot drive SUCCESSFULLY while talking on the phone.

I'm glad to hear that you are having good luck with them ... like I have said before though, I know several people who haven't been quite as lucky (maybe they use their phones more .... or maybe just more while moving ....)

As mentioned earlier, I think (actually, I know) the specific phone one is using can have alot to do with it ..... people often fail to make the differentiation: what might appear to be a problem with their cell carrier could actually be a problem with the phone they're using ....

I will give you that....we DO have high-end phones so that could be playing a part in our satisfaction with Verizon.

Well, yeah ..... it kinda does .... although for a complete understanding one would really have to know how much you actually use your phone (number of minutes) and the circumstances under which you use it (locations, whether moving or not, etc.) ...... not that I'm asking (no interest really)

IOW, if you use your phone to a rather limited degree, and rarely while moving, I wouldn't necessarily characterize that as a great testament to how good the carrier's network is ......

Well there you go ..... a fairly elegant solution IMHO .... kudos to Verizon for making it available.

Of course, it is a bit pricey compared to the iPhone .... $40 per month for 250MB of downloads, or $60 for 5GB ..... (as compared to the iPhone's $40 for unlimited downloads)

Now holdonow......we were grandfathered in from our contract with our air card so we have unlimited....otherwise it would not be prudent. While on the road we have two lap tops and two I-pods using that mifi with access for one more device.

It's certainly true that ATT does need to address the fact that they currently don't offer tethering with the iPhone .... (but there are ways to get around that until they do .....)

Uhhhh yeah .... well, actually .... anytime .....

(Sent from my laptop ....... and yes Virginia: .... I'm sitting still .....)

I certainly didn't want to turn Lawrence's poll into a whizzing match over carriers. I said earlier that I would love to have an I-phone but am unwilling to change carriers to get one. The next best thing for MY needs is to use my I-pod for all of the applications that one can have with the I-phone. I posted about that in this thread and others to simply let anyone interested know that there are other options out there. When I'm satisfied with a product, I generally pass that information on to others.

That map is wrong,
Yup - you are probably correct - I just found out that the FCC database that the maps I posted use is neither necessarily complete, nor current (you taxes dollars at work ... not :()

I didn't pay anything really for the phone, something like $5 but it is going back when I get a chance.
Understand - I can only report what my (and my wife's) experience has been - we generally haven't seen the problems some such as yourself have experienced - since we both upgraded to new phones (within the last two years)

I drive all over, she drives (for Fedex Home Delivery) primarily in the Cleveland metro area and suburbs .... neither one of us has had what I would characterize as a significant amount of dropped calls .... they are relatively rare.

Hope you get it sorted out.

Uh, you DID say that you talked 10 to 12 hours recently, giving the specific locations.....didn't you?
Yeah ... I absolutely did - however to draw from that single data point only, that that constitutes the majority of when and how I use my phone is merely an assumption on your part and nothing more ......

And then to take it from there to try and infer that I am somehow unsafe ..... when you don't even know me, have never observed how I operate a vehicle, and don't know what my safety record is ..... well, that's pretty much beyond the pale .....

But hey - you are a Michelle Malkin fan ..... so I guess I understand ..... personal opinion (as opposed to actual facts or observation), guilt by inference, and that sorta thing probably counts for alot ....

I don't need to see each and every individual out there to know that the MAJORITY cannot drive SUCCESSFULLY while talking on the phone.
Yup - a preconceived notion, or a fixed idea, is always just so much better than actually looking, seeing, and thereby making an observation ......

I used to live in Florida where there are alot of incompetent, elderly drivers - probably far more per capita than anywhere else - who probably have no business whatsoever even having a license ..... let alone actually being on the road ......

But I certainly wouldn't use those observations to condemn all drivers who are past a certain age - and try to characterize them all as incompetent ...... let alone a specific individual, in particular, without actually knowing them ...... or without having bothered to observe whether that specific person was truly incompetent or not.

Nor would I think that my limited observations as above would even begin to constitute a majority (while I am no doubt arrogant, I am nowhere even close to being that arrogant)

I understand if some find it difficult to talk on the phone while driving - everyone's attention span and ability to focus is different to some degree - as we are all individuals.

And I applaud those folks, who - like yourself - find they are unable to do so safely, and therefore refrain from it ..... and so avoid endangering others ......

So please, by all means - stay off your phone while you are at wheel.

However, also please realize - there are some of us who can drive successfully (in certain circumstances) and be on the phone at the same time (.... as well as walking and chewing gum concurrently .....)

There are also some of us who realize that there indeed inappropriate times to be on the phone, and have enough common sense to excuse ourselves and end the call ... until a more appropriate time.

I just want a TELEPHONE!! NO buttons on the outside, just set levels etc and lock them in. VERY loud ringers. I want to be able to hear it over the truck running. NO CAMERA. NO INTERNET. A little larger than most phones, sorta like that Jitterbug phone. A little bit larger keypad that is more compable with my aging eyes and fumbling fingers. It has to be RUGGED!! Water resistant, shock and dust resistant. I don't text but would like the texting feature to insure I can get the messeges from FedEx.

Layoutshooter, I agree with you one hundred precent! That would be the PERFECT phone for me also! :D
