YEAH, we did NOT have "cool toys" like that. Just stupid boring stuff like radios, satillites, antennea and dumb goofy stuff like that. OH, and those dreaded machines called computers!! OH how I hated those things!!

How do you get it over to cdma only?
The exact procedure depends on your phone, but basically you have to get into the Service (or Test) Menu, where you can change all kinds of parameters, like forcing the variable rate Vocode (voice coding quality) from EVCR to higher quality 13k encoding. EVCR uses a variable bitrate to encode, and utilizes more error correction, so in weak areas with a lot of RF interference, your voice could be slightly garbled for a bit. The variable bitrate can be anywhere from 2k to 13k, with 8k being the norm. Not all networks support EVCR, and will default to 8k. EVCR uses less cell tower capacity than the constant rate 13k does, which is good for cell phone companies in that they can have more capacity per tower, but it generally degrades the voice signal when it suburban and rural areas by using a lower bitrate. Mine is always set to 13k. YMMV.

You can even change how often the phone "seeks" a cell tower to check for an incoming call (too slow and you get phone calls without the phone ringing or you miss a lot of calls, too fast and you run your battery down too quickly). Rather than mess too much with that one, I just got an extended battery. But on older phones where I didn't have an extended battery, it increased battery life considerably.

You can force it to CDMA from here, as well.

On my Motoroloa v9m, you press #073887* and then press the 6 digit security code (almost always six zero's, unless you change it for some reason), and you will get to the Service Menu. That's where you can change some of the parameters, none of which I'd recommend you changing except the Vocode, and if you want to change it to CDMA-only, you scroll down to the Test Menu option and enable that. Once you exit out you are in the Test Menu where you can see the blood and guts of the digital innards of the phone. Press to the right a few times and you'll get to a screen that looks as geek as the others, but you can then scroll down and change the "auto" to "cdma" for the HDR Pref setting. The phone will then be permanently set for CDMA, unless you go back and change it, or unless and until you update your PRL with *228.

There are detailed step-by-steps to do these and many other wonderful things to your phone at Howard Forums. Grind down the forums to get to your particular phone manufacturer and model, and then look at the sticky's. It's in there.

Lawrence,
A really dumb question, what would the app do?

I can't see what other than a branded app which is cool but what?

I've got an I-Phone. As a PDA it is worth the money. However, as a cell phone, I've never had so many dropped calls.

Also, during the fishing season, we sometimes will fish about 15-18 miles offshore on Lake Erie (actually fishing near, or on, the international border with Canada) and only Sprint-Nextel can provide a signal strong enough to make a cell call from that location.

BTW, a couple of years ago, Sprint would pay us $1.25 per mile to travel an exact route in the rural areas of Ohio so they could check their signals from our transponders in the vehicle to the towers. We did this for 3 (three) years until the economy went south last fall. It was good money and proved to me, at least, they were serious about upgrading the signal strength.

What kind of app are you considering ??

Forgot to add this to my original post(s). I-Phone has the Apple browser "Safari" already installed. While it is somewhat difficult (though possible) to browse most websites, because some of the signatures are so incredibly long, i.e. layoutshooter, it renders the browser on the I-Phone useless here on EOL.

Truth be told, while I read most posts, those with the very long signature lines I tend to skip over. They have gotten so long and out of control, that I have to scroll down several times just to get to get past someone's over-inflated ego.

Kind of like those whose "tat" their bodies up like a carnival freak.

"Look at Me. I need attention."

LOL

You can set your preferences in UserCP top left of page and not see signatures and avatars...thats what have done...

Really ? .... that's funny ... because I have used it many times to browse and read EO ......

And, for that matter, post on EO ..... (and I got fairly big fingers ) .... and with the most recent 3.0 software update the keyboard now works in Landscape orientation, not just Portrait, making the keyboard easier to use (cause it's bigger) ... and Cut, Copy, and Paste is handy without a doubt .....

Are you familiar with how to zoom in and out of a web page in Safari ? (double tap or pinch)

And to quickly navigate to the top of a web page ? (tap the status bar on top of the screen)

It definitely not as easy as using my MacBook ..... with it's larger screen and dedicated keyboard .... but it is very usable ...... and of course, my MacBook won't fit in my shirt pocket .... :D

BTW, HH - what phone/service did you have before the iPhone ?

Greg,

We would make the iPhone serve our News, Forums and Classifieds in iPhone structure.

Lawrence,
I assume that means in a format that can be used on the iPhone?

Doesn't EO use other mobile web formating?

iPhone is a good thing but there are other phones out there and for the money you may be spending, the users may be limited where as many of us use other devices.

Another dumb question for iphone users, do all the apps have to be loaded through Apple?

I have a Iphone 3g and think its great. I was with cellular one but that company was purchased by ATT otherwise I probably never would have gotten one.
Because I'm in a rural area I only get evdo service but when I get down around Saginaw I get 3g and it seems to work fine. My brother is a truck driver and last week while I was on a trip going from northern MI to southern MI we were on the phone for several hours and there were a few dropped calls but some of them were from his end (Sprint)
I have and do browse the EO web site now and would definitely download a specific application. Then I could say "there's a App for that" should the opportunity present itself
I do have a dislike about the Iphone 3G. The battery life. This is the first phone I've had where I talked past the battery life ( my truck driving brother ) on the other hand the interface is great, I like the innovation so much it has caused me to look closely at a Mac book pro 13 as my next laptop

Technically, yes .... they do.

In actuality, no .... they don't ....... if one is willing to "jailbreak" your iPhone ..... you can load apps from anyone, anywhere ..... (meaning apps that don't have the Apple Good Housekeeping Seal of Computing) ..... haven't done it to mine .... although if ATT doesn't get off their butts and offer tethering I just might ....

Yup .... battery life when actually using the phone could definitely be better (on standby it is pretty good) ..... it would also be nice if the battery was user-replaceable.

Since most of my use is in the vehicle, I usually just leave mine plugged into a 12v cigarette lighter ----> USB charging adapter I have, so that the phone is always charged.

There is a app for tethering, but I haven't tried it. Had the new version for about two months. Seems to work well and haven't had any drop calls yet.

Yeah .... apparently there are a couple of different apps or hacks that will accomplish the feat - some require "jailbreaking" the phone. There was one that was posted in the App Store for a short time that I believe did not - don't recall the name of it - it was pulled shortly after it became available.

I managed to locate a copy of that app on the 'net and downloaded it. I have not installed it yet or gotten around to figuring out what would be involved in doing so. Keep hoping that ATT will just make tethering available without any further fees (HA !)

Kewl !

How much mobil use does your phone get ? (vs. from a fixed location) Are you in a major metro area ?

No.....I am in the woods of TN. Not near any interstate. Tried it on several trips and still no problems. Haven't went out west since having it, so jury still out on that one. May be because it is the newer version. My son has the older model and I get a better signal out in the middle of nowhere better than he does.
We did have Sprint, but in FL it worked well on 95, but at the coast it was worthless. Had to stand outside everytime I wanted to call someone.

On a side note for tethering.
