How much deadhead is too much deadhead
I don't mind doing 100 for a 500 mile job provided there is enough time to do it but 100 for a 300 mile run seems stupid to me or am I just too anal!

I maybe completely wrong on this (wouldn't be the first time) but I don't consider deadhead. Since I'm on percentage, the way I look at all loads is simple. What's it pay divided by all mile. If I like it, I take the load.

It makes no difference 100 mile dh 300 loaded or 300 dh 100 loaded. All that matters is pay per mile all miles.

All miles $ is what counts. I deadheaded 100 miles Tuesday morning for a 220 loaded mile load. Sounds horrible, right? Not at $389, it wasn't.
Just take it all into account.
Are you dropping in the middle of a ZERO freight zone? Get DH money on the front end too.

Thats the only thing with long dh's, it gives the shipper time to get it done cheaper and cancel your load.

Stop thinking dh and start thinking all miles. Put it this way think 2100 mile load, does it pay what it needs to?

Although it would suck if it cancelled, I'd deadhead 1000 miles to make a 1 mile delivery if it paid for 1001 miles, or close enough.

We did it the other day . Baton Rouge to mobile dh for a mobile to mobile run. It was a 1.5 mile run but it paid like a 200 mile run.

Of course I'm with fedex and in June when they offer it to me I'll just decline it.

DH gave me more mileage deductions. For many, DH miles are actually being paid back at tax time.

Deadhead matters to me when you have to log and lose hrs driving stupid mt miles, seems brokers are all hung up on time frames and can't understand log books!

DH can be OK, even long ones, if it pays right. The hours don't matter IF the pay is the same as running those hours loaded.

Canceled loads ARE a problem. One REALLY has to pay attention where that pick up is. Is it in an area you can get out of if the load cancels? How long WAS that DH? IF the load cancels, it WILL impact your logs.
