Asking for load/rate over qc before taking

Does anyone or everyone ask their dispatchers to send the load and rate info before you accept the load?
Since becoming an owner I'm doing that, afterall, we have to cover our cost and, wait for it....make a profit.
It isn't a big deal for most dispatchers, most carriers, etc...afterall do they take loads from customers without seeing the rate?
My dispatchers don't have a major issue with it but most dispatchers are in one speed.....GO NOW.
How do your dispatchers handle it?
I know some call, tell u they r sending an offer over, and u have five minutes to let them know.

9 times out of 10, I get that info over the phone before it is even sent over the QC..Now that being said I am at a point with Load 1 that is is becooming a "non issue"...they have not even hinted at offering me anything that I would even think about turning down because of the rate of pay....

I'm w/ Dennis on that. I rarely ask the rate. The reason I should is more to make sure the checks line up w/ the amounts I had made. The last time I asked was actually after the run. It was a Flint to Lansing run, 72 miles. I asked what that run that I just took paid & they said $100.

The only time I need to ask the rate is on the long one ways cuz we're not so great at getting back & the ones that a toll road comes into play. We've got no adjustments for those.

I'll also ask the rates when I start going to Canada. I'm not at that point yet though.

Wow, this thread is an eye-opener. I had no idea that anyone was doing business this way. The load information is complete when it is sent to us (FedEx) so I guess I don't understand folks accepting work without knowing what they'll be paid for it!

It is easy to accept a run when you know what the miles are and that your carrier doesn't take cheap freight and that your minimum % of the pay is normally going to exceed a set amount...like a dollar a mile or more for a CV...yea I will get $.96 a mile sometimes, but then again that will normally be for ALL miles....

Diva, it is how they operate, they put trust into the company and it is returned with consistent performance.

Exactly Greg..on a few rare occasions we don't get the rate for whatever reason, so far no regrets, as Dennis said...Trust. If they violate that trust then that will change things....Weird Dennis and I and a few others have talked about this very topic...about how people recruited from them "structured" carriers would adapt to our way of running....very "flexible"
Bottom line...They trust that we will be professional and get the load done in a timely manner and WE trust that on "certain occasions" that we will be compensated properly...

Yea, figured that......that's admirable, too bad we ALL can't do business that way.

Yes..it is too bad you can't trust your carrier not to throw that cheap crap your way...I don't blame you for not moving before you know the exact terms of the load....I'd be the same way, if there was a history of low rate loads that would be unacceptable.

Diva,
You know I'm not really trying to beat up on any specific company but many of them have been their own worst enemy and destroyed the trust between the contractor and carrier.

I mean reading the hilarious FedEx thread going on and on is one good example of it, my company has agents who seem not to tell the truth (many on my don't haul list) and other companies have their issue too.

If some of what John and Load-1 would just do, while booting out the arrogance and the paternalistic attitude, we would be doing the same thing.

Been with Load 1 now going on 2 months. First couple loads we automatically excepted, didn't know what the pay was until after delivered.
It was very scary to me but I was trusting them and the other drivers that told us about Load 1. The experience has paid off. Now we aren't even concerned what it will pay because we know it will be good. We haven't been disappointed yet.

It is a different way of thinking about how to accept the loads offered.

It is VERY EASY to TRUST Load 1 to get us a good rate. The dispatchers are awesome. Working with Load 1 is all that and more!

Load 1 works for us!

I thought you was with Load1? If you got your own truck why didn't you put it on with Load1?

After always hearing about people "being screwed" and people not getting paid, this thread really warms my heart. Seriously. And it didn't have to involve FECC "cheerleaders"

i dont consider it a trust issue, just simply a business issue. all load info should be given to you at time of dispatch or as soon after as possible. as soon after as possible doesnt mean when i deliver the load. i dont work for a "structured" carrier but i still expect all that info. i like to keep all my books caught up as im going along not when i finish a load or at the end of the week when i get my settlement sheet. i dont feel trust as much to do with it. its a business. i trust my carrier not to low ball me and will leave and get a load without knowing the rate but the load info needs to be to me shortly after.

I cant imaine taking a load I did not know the rate on, Landstar always calls, 'I have a load, yadda, yadda yadda, would you like it?"

All is decided before the QC ever beeps ...

btw, even though I am not interested in jumping ship, Load1 seems to be a pretty straight company .... was talking with an ex Landstar team a few weeks ago that is over there with a Sprinter, they seemed quite pleased.

Most of the loads we are referring to are going to Canada and they haven't figured out the split yet...and occur during busy times..We are not overloaded with office staff....their focus is acquiring loads....and yes they always call first...with particulars.Even in business there is some degree of trust..

Yes, I am at Load-1 and after hearing this trust issue I am adjusting my way of doing this. I have always trusted them and without reason when I became an owner I got this twisted business attitude in my mind.

From here on in, its send me the load.....I've trusted them for over a year and bad experiences with other carriers shouldn't have changed how I run with Load-1.

The info comes over the QC and that is all I need. I've ran at a profit since buying the truck and that was possible based on trust. Why did I change? Because I listened to the wrong people and was ignorant y for embracing their suggestions.

Its back to doing it my way which was trust and my carriers trust in me!
