Predictably, you missed the point ..... totally and completely .....

I was wondering how long it would take one of the "usual suspects" to post a reply in a similar vein as yours .... needless to say Leo, you didn't disappoint ..... (but then you rarely do ...)

You (apparently) believe that my comments indicated that Bill Maher's political views are, in total, in the mainstream ... that wasn't what I was saying at all ....

But since I'm sure that is the premise that you raise the question on, if you had bothered to examine the Wikipedia link provided earlier you would have found that Bill Maher holds a number of political positions which I suspect you yourself hold as well ....

It is certainly the case that as a public figure and celebrity, Bill Maher is within the mainstream of current American culture .... as is Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, or for that matter ....... Wanda Sykes (much to your chagrin I'm quite sure)

My original post was more about the relative unawareness that some have of our current culture, and what it consists of .....

So is Babe Winkleman, Dick Whitwam, Roland Martin, myself and any other of a group of people who have done national level TV. SO WHAT?

You are no aware of everything that goes on in "mainstream" culture, what ever that is, why should anyone else be? OR, are you the person in the office that determines what is needed to be known to be part of the "mainstream"?

Is baseball mainstream? What about hockey? Would a person have to know the name of every player on every team to be "mainstream"?

Define mainstream culture. How many partake in it? Are there classes for it?

And why is that? Are we now required to have HBO to partake in what you call mainstream culture?
No ... but you get (and occasionally watch) broadcast TV (like uhh .... ABC ?) don't you ?

Why is TV SO important to you?
It isn't particularly ... except to a small extent in that it allows me to be more aware of what's happening in the current culture in which I live ......

Which part of "mainstream" culture am I required to partake in?
.... lol ...... no requirements to take part in anything .... there is no law which requires one to be aware of what happening in current culture ....

Awareness is not mandated about such things .... however some folks do find that it is beneficial to be aware of what is occurring in their surroundings .... YMMV ...

I partake is MY "mainstream" culture. You don't. SO WHAT?
Kinda hard to divine what you mean here .... I think you intended to use at least one word which was different than what you actually used above ......

I might have mistyped, I do that a lot. It does not matter really. This guy is of no importance. My point was just because he is on TV does NOT make him, or anyone else, mainstream. The other point is that "mainstream" means something different to everybody. I maintain awareness of what affects me and my family. I maintain awareness of threats against the same and the Nation. Bad tv people do not affect me. No real reason to be aware of them. In other words. I don't give a flip about him.

I rarely watch any of the networks. MOST of what they put on sucks so I don't watch it. I would rather hunt or fish. More productive use of my time.

REALLY? His show is still on the air. He is mainstream to me!! You see, in MY world if you don't hunt, fish or shoot, you are not "mainstream". What a silly term that is. People do and watch what they want. There is NO "mainstream" culture by my definition.

You nailed it ..... :D

Sorry, I am not "stuck" anywhere. I just do as I please, how I please and when and where I please. Being "aware" of a foul mouthing cheap thrill jokester is NOT mainstream, it is just childish. I prefer to spend my money on fishing rods or shotgun shells, not HBO. Silly me, spend my free time, when possible, outdoors, fresh air, REAL LIFE, getting exercise and fresh non store bought food when I could be watching HBO!!

Yes, you are. You're stuck outside of the mainstream. And when you are stuck outside of the mainstream, you are, by definition, out of touch with both the mainsteam and those who are in it.

I just do as I please, how I please and when and where I please.
Nothing wrong with that. But don't pretend your still in touch with most of American, 'cause you're not.

Being "aware" of a foul mouthing cheap thrill jokester is NOT mainstream, it is just childish.
Being "aware" of things in the mainstream is not childish. It's smart.

I prefer to spend my money on fishing rods or shotgun shells, not HBO. Silly me, spend my free time, when possible, outdoors, fresh air, REAL LIFE, getting exercise and fresh non store bought food when I could be watching HBO!!
Like I said, there's nothing wrong with doing what you're doing. Just don't pretend you are in touch with the people who are in the mainstream culture (the majority of Americans), or that you know what's best for the mainstream, because by definition and by your own words and actions, you clearly don't.

The above sentence really makes no sense - since you didn't bother to quote only the portion of what I wrote that your sentence above is responding to - so that anyone reading could easily understand your point ....

As for you on national level TV .... let us know when we can all tune in .... it would be a hoot, I'm sure ....

Regarding the other people you mentioned, trying to equate them with being "mainstream" because they once appeared on national TV (or cable, whether once or a few times) is ludicrous .... it's so retarded that it doesn't even merit a response .....

Go do a random survey of the public and see how many people have heard of Babe Winkleman or Roland Martin vs. Bill Maher ....

Or Al and Ron Linder, Dan Sura, or Dave Csanda vs. Wanda Sykes .....

Ask 'em by name .... or show 'em a picture .....

You are no aware of everything that goes on in "mainstream" culture, what ever that is, why should anyone else be?
I am "no aware" ?

Well, first off, I never said they should ....

Secondly, mainstream culture could be said to be that part of our culture of which most people are at least aware of (if not fully knowledgeable about ... as in: "Oh yeah .... I've heard of that guy ..... but I don't watch him regularly ...")

OR, are you the person in the office that determines what is needed to be known to be part of the "mainstream"?
Leave it to you to expect that there would be an office that determines such things .... I'd imagine that the government mold is pretty hard to break out of ....

Is baseball mainstream?
... certainly less so than it was ...

What about hockey?
..... only if you are a Cannuck .... :D

Would a person have to know the name of every player on every team to be "mainstream"?
.... perhaps not .... but I'd guess that they would at least have to be aware of the fact that there were players, teams, and even a sport .....

Define mainstream culture.
You can do yourself - it really isn't that hard - just get out a dictionary and then break it down:

First define the word "mainstream" and then define the word "culture" ... and then, while considering those definitions, look at it from the perspective of a typical American citizen .... (I know that assuming the viewpoint of someone else is likely to be a challenge, but hey - give it your best shot ....)

I'm sure that even you can figure it out ....

How many partake in it?
Lots .... otherwise, it wouldn't be mainstream ....

Seriously, I couldn't make up a question that was so utterly clueless as the above .... I mean, just think about it for a second: .... mainstream ? .... lots of people involved ? .... yeeeaaahh ....

Are there classes for it?
No, but if there were you might want to take one ......

It's really a hoot to watch you try to respond LOS .... you believe that the best strategy is immediate and unrelenting rapid response (or attack if you will) .... without much thought or effort given to what you actually write (apparently) ... to paraphrase a commenter from long ago: "Just shoot from the hip ....." ..... typical for a chest-thumper .....

The only thing I can add - since you seem to wanna harp on it (in a sad, pathetic attempt to inject some sort of a strawman argument and divert things) there Thumper (my new nickname for ya LOS) is the HBO thing ....

Bill Maher was on broadcast TV - he had a show on ABC (ever heard of that ? - it's the American Broadcasting Corporation if you haven't) called Politically Incorrect that ran until 2002 ......

Is this another (more polite) way of saying "out of touch with reality" ? :D

First off, we play hockey in the United States too. In fact, only two of the original 6 NHL teams were in Canadian Cities. Those who were mainstream where I grew up played hockey. Even the geeks!!

Second, I was not being all that serious about this mainstream stuff.

For someone to say that another person is not mainstream is to first assume that the person making that statement is. (clunky but I don't know how else to word it)

There are many different parts to a "culture". Not every person in every part of this country takes part in or even pays attention too every facet of what makes up "American" culture.

Television personalities are only a minor part of what our culture is and, for the most part, the least important. I would be willing to bet that a majority of people do not have HBO. Just a guess.

There are just, at least in my opinion, far more important things to pay attention to than a foul mouthed HBO comic.

We all have things that we feel are important in life. Setting my hunting and fishing aside, I have things that I pay very close attention too. Some involve the outdoors like the loss of wetlands in Michigan. That is important to me. It is important to millions of people. In my mind, that makes it "mainstream".

I try to pay attention to defense matters, it is difficult to do. There is so much mis-information out there it is not an easy task to get down to the reality. No longer having first hand access relegates me to second and third hand sources. Most open source material on that subject tends to be badly slanted and highly inaccurate.

I try to pay attention to bills that are being worked on both state and federal. Again, so much garbage being spewed by the "mainstream" press, you know, the 4 major networks, that it is very difficult to sort out what is real and what is not. Reading them does not help all the time.

I pay little to no attention to the "fluff", like that comic. He is of no real importance and not worth the effort.

Please try to refrain from making fun of peoples poor typing, spelling and math skills, you might not know the reason for their problems.

Many people have learning/reading/writing skill problems that are not just being dumb or uneducated or lazy.

I know many highly educated people, on man in particular with multiple masters degrees, who has trouble reading or writing anything. He always needs help from others. I have had the honor of working with him on many occasions and, with the help of my proofreaders, we did some amazing work. He was pretty darn good with a shotgun in his day too!! Several bouts with cancer has rendered him unable to handle the recoil and his shotgun days are over for him. He is still working but I bet for not much longer and he still needs people to read and write for him.

Sorry ... I don't think so ....

At any rate, you supplied the canvas, the palette, the colors, and the brushes .... all I did (as I always do) was merely add a few minor brush strokes to complete the picture .... that you yourself had already painted .....

My comment wasn't about politics, where I agree with very little of what he has to say, but about current culture where Bill Maher is a D-Lister who flirts with the fringe but will never be A List mainstream.
Heheheheh .... I'm practically pizzin' myself here on this one Leo ..... Leo's Entertainment Weekly ..... you aspiring to be the new Perez Hilton?

Perez Hilton

And D-Lister ?

The guy has 5 books, 17 movie appearances, 9 HBO Specials, and numerous appearances in 17 television shows, including his own broadcast and cable TV shows .....

I'll bet while he's suffering in that poverty that the "D-List" seems to bring, he's wondering how he will make the mortgage payment .... maybe even where his next meal will come from .... NOT ...

No, I'm pretty sure that it is exactly his politics that drive you up a wall ... particularly in light of the evidence that you yourself have provided us of what just a little TV viewing does to you .... (mebbe LOS is onto something there with the avoiding the TV thing ..... oh, wait a minute ..... it doesn't seem to have helped his grasp on reality in any measurable way, so .... maybe not ....)

I wondered how long it would take for a presumptuous reply... needless to say, you never disappoint.
For you Leo, I'm always glad to oblige .... :D

Neither do I, really.

It can be .....

Your first mistake would be to assume that it is (important to me) .....

I was asking because I just could not understand why knowing who this comic is determines that a person is or is not mainstream. That's all. I just could care less about him, his show or that network. It is not important.
