6 weeks in and deeply disillusioned

There are a couple of things I don’t understand on this post. Rigorous Orientation, which sure does not sound like FEDEX Custom Critical or paying broker fees. We have found FedEx to be very accurate with their bookkeeping and I do watch our income very closely. We also found that what our...

    House versus Apartment

I have been under the impression that if you only lived in your truck you could not take the per diem exemption on your taxes. Have you heard that? It is to bad you are back into that rut after finding out how much easier it is to not have those worries.

    House versus Apartment

We are presently living in an apartment with our oldest daughter. We had a house the first part of our trucking career. We had a nice house with acreage that we really enjoyed. We found that out on the road we worried about our home a lot. When we went home we had lots to do as for some...

    Home Time

We have our budget set up by the month. We try to plan our home time on a month that has 5 pay periods. This doesn't seem to hurt the checking account as much this way. We also schedule any maintenance that needs to be one to the truck that we can during this time.

What is a glad hand ?

Yes there is but they are seldom used. On the truck there is usually a place on the truck to hook the glad hands and the pig tail to keep them stable and clean. Most are just flopped on the deck though. You can also purchase covers in most truck stops.

    Uncle Sam go away!!!!

But where is the fun in that? No challenge, I like it complicated! Give me my QuickBooks and Quicken any day of the week and lots of categories.

    Baskin Robbins?

Craig, you are right 1.50 all miles for any load when you are not a specialized truck? We have a hard time saying what our bottom line is that we will take a load for. Depends on the direction, toll roads, weight and other considerations. We are also not opposed if we are asked to take a solo...

    Rules for Dispatchers

We feel after being with a large over the road company that our dispatchers are the cream of the crop for the most part. We have had a few give us really wrong information and a very few actually be rude never have we been hung up on or screamed at. We are very seldom left on hold unless we are...

    Fridge - Unasked for advice

Wow India I looked in my refrigerator and I need to do some cleaning also. It is funny how you don't notice the small stickies until you think someone else might look at it. Thanks for the word of warning!

Hours Of Service & driver retention dilemmas

When was the last time you have seen an officer wandering around a truck stop asking every truck to show log books? Even then how many times when you go through a scale do they even ask to see your log book? You need to be ready when going through a scale to show a log book but the percentage...

    Uncle Sam go away!!!!

We have had the same trouble as you trying to find a local accountant. We have just located a new one that just handles trucks, does not require you to send all your receipts, and appears rather knowledgeable about our business. His firm was recommended by another driver but as we have not had...

    Tipping the mechanic

That is a good idea Dreamer. Last year we bought 100.00 worth of 2.00 bills and handed them out at Christmas time. We also feel someone has to go above and beyond their duty before we will give a tip. We have been thanked at several places we have unloaded at and it sure makes you feel good...

    Get the DOT number!

We will see what happens. The insurance card and number the driver gave us no longer carries that company. The phone number he gave us goes un answered. We did not call the police as it was on private property and thought that was the correct procedure. We did immediately call dispatch and...

    Image is Everything

TeamBud8 We make the choice to wear our uniform. We have found when we walk into a customer, the customer usually know exactly what we are there to pick up. We are treated as professionally as we look. So we take pride in our uniforms and the other personal reason is they are easy to wash and...

    Tipping the mechanic

In most situations you have described if we feel they have gone above and beyond their duties. We feel if we get exceptional service we should should reward them.

    Get the DOT number!

We had a big truck back into our sleeper door while at the Flying J in Laredo TX. We thought we where lucky as the guy gave us all of his information including insurance. We thought no problem we will contact insurance and all is well. Wrong! The insurance company does not carry them anymore...
