    Rough week in Orlando

Zookeeper in Detroit said if it were a female with a nest nearby or the kid stepped on it while the gator was submerged, it might have attacked. Unprovoked attacks are very rare. I won't go within 10' of fresh water at night down there though. Gators are quicker than you'd think and are most...

    Promaster box truck

Sleeper reminds me of those found on pickup campers. Those were fun when I was a kid! Don't think I'd want one now though. In cold weather I often use a sleeping bag, and that would be a real pain to crawl into in such a tiny space. No air circulation in summer either.

    Yet another Detour

Lucky me... I live in Jackson, so can take surface streets to dodge the I-94 construction. That M-14 mess in Ann Arbor hits me hard though. Google Maps on the phone found a way to dodge through Ann Arbor without taking TOO long, but it's still a PITA.

    Kidney stones

Had one 10 years ago. Literally felt like a corkscrew was being jammed into my lower back. Pain was so bad I was puking. Had to go do a photo shoot with my brother out in North Carolina though. So he took me to the hospital and I got a CT-Scan, they pumped me full of pain killer. Headed off...

    Emigrant Pass, California

Photo of Emigrant Pass, where I-80 crosses the Sierra Nevada mountains. Last October I had a run from Grand Rapids -> Sacramento. It was raining off and on, and I saw one car flipped over in Reno, another up in the pass, and a FedEx Semi that plowed into a guardrail -- white-knuckle driving...

    most boring piece of highway

When are they NOT working on I-75 in Ohio... Almost as bad as their tollway.

    most boring piece of highway

In the Midwest... I-57 tries to put me to sleep. Somehow wind up doing an overnight run on most of that road too, when I go that way. I-69 between Fort Wayne and Indianapolis... I wind up there at 2 AM far too often as well. And I-65 south of Indy. Seems to take forever to reach Louisville...

    Favorite skyline in driving?

Nobody mentioned the Smokey Mountains? Lake Tahoe out west is awesome. I was crossing the Emigrant Pass on I-80 just before sunrise and decided to detour down to the lake -- amazing views as the sun came up over the Sierra Nevadas. Weirdly enough, West Wendover, NV at night comes to mind also...

    price of fuel

Some Arab oil minister flapped his lips about production cuts and suddenly wholesale prices jumped. Fundamentally still a glut of oil though, so the hype won't hold prices at the higher level. Countries with lots of oil like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Venezuela have no interest in cutting...

    I75 southbound closed ky

Electronic sign on I-75S near Covington, KY mentioned the freeway closure and said ALL COMMERCIAL VEHICLES must use the US-25E detour. I expect that with USDOT numbers on the van, this includes many of us. However, Google Maps shows a short detour east from Williamsburg, KY get you to US-27...

    POLL Fitness Club Membership

I'm paying just $20 a month for "Black Card" @ Planet Fitness. There's a lot of these opening up around the country -- even in little towns like Kokomo, IN and Findley, OH. I've had some luck overnighting at these around Detroit -- noisy in parking lot, but there's always people around and...

    Nashville = no fun

I was in Nashville last year during the ice storm. Ugly situation. Fortunately, the cheap movie theater out by Antioch was still functioning. Knoxville was really not hit hard by this storm. A little ice and snow, but melted off the next day and major roads in town were fine. 50 here today!

POLL How Do You Keep Warm?

Keep warm? Is it June already? Reflectix + foam board. Lots and lots of layers -- 20 degree bag and another over the top of that. I've done <10 degrees and was cozy enough. When it hits 5 I hit the motel though. Mr. Buddy heater is there for dinking around between runs, but I don't use it...

    Who's buying a lottery ticket?

1 in 292,000,000? Roughly the odds of winning at one of those truck stop casinos in Nevada then!

2016 is on the way !!!!

Try to keep the van alive until the weather gets warmer! Then find one just like it with 130k or so and do the mods I wish I'd been able to afford when I bought current vehicle.

POLL Will you be home for the holidays?

I'll be in-service until early PM on the 24th, then up in Northern Michigan visiting my in-laws. Going to try and be back on the board 29-31st just in case, but I doubt I'll get more than a local SE Michigan run, if anything.

Some days you scratch your head?

Still heavier than the brown paper lunch bag with 4# of ball bearings I got in Cleveland last week.

    Slow for the holiday?

Cargo? No problem there. Just issues getting SLEEP as timing was typically erratic. High proportion of non-automotive stuff this week though. 1500# of Armstrong floor tiles from x-dock in Chicago to a home improvement store in W. Michigan was a first! Twice this week I delivered stuff that...
