Primary elections season far from over

The path to Election Day in November has stops in several states during the next several weeks as voters will narrow down their options for who will appear on ballots.

Already, 28 states have held primary elections as they reduce the field for Nov. 2. In August, 13 more states will do the same while nine other states wait until September.

Voters in Kansas, Michigan and Missouri head to the voting booth Tuesday, Aug. 3. Tennessee voters can cast ballots Thursday, Aug. 5.

Registered voters can visit voting booths Aug. 10 in Colorado, Connecticut and Minnesota. The following week, on Aug. 17, Washington and Wyoming will hold primaries. A week later, Alaska, Arizona and Florida have primaries on Aug. 24 and Louisiana on Aug. 28.

The primary season wraps up in September. Eight more states – Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin – and the District of Columbia will hold elections on Sept. 14. Hawaii follows four days later when voters can cast ballots on Sept. 18.

Truckers who are registered to vote should make the effort to cast their ballots. Although primary elections typically don’t receive the same attention as the fall election, they can be just as, if not more, important.

Races for various elected offices will be trimmed in the lead up to November. A variety of other issues – and many that are of significance to the trucking industry – also will be on ballots.

Professional drivers who miss the deadline to register to vote in their home state primaries shouldn’t throw in the towel. There is still time to get registered for Election Day in November.

To encourage truckers to get involved in the process, OOIDA is once again focused on providing truckers with information on how to register in all 50 states and on early voting and absentee ballots – where available.

Visit TruckVote.com for more information. Those truckers who do not have Web access – or those who have questions or need assistance – can call the OOIDA Membership Department at 800-444-5791, Ext. 4906.
